Sandberg leaving Cubs

The Cubs didn't pick Ryne Sandberg as their manager and he chose not to return as the team's Triple-A affiliate in Iowa.

Sandberg has left the organization, Cubs general manager Jim Hendry told reporters (via the Chicago Tribune). The Cubs offered the Iowa gig to Sandberg, but he turned it down.

"I don't think that was ever in his plans," Hendry said.

Sandberg leaving Cubs

Same thing happened in Toronto with my Jays.  Ernie Whitt, arguably the best catcher ever to wear a Jays uinform was being groomed to take the job, even coached the Canadian team in the World Cup and Olympics, even though heès American.  Our idiot GM at the time, JP Ricciardi, let him go from his bench coach postion while still retaining some other coaches, alienating Whitt from the Jays, he deserved better.  Ryne Sandberg deserved better.

Totally agree with oscwahoo, All Cubs fans need to boycott the team by NOT going to Wrigley. Once the team starts losing all of those ticket and concession sales, let's see how receptive they are to the mood of the fans!

Sorry to see you go Ryno, you were my favorite player growing up and the ONLY Cubs jersey I own!

Sandberg leaving Cubs

The way i see it my dad saw the cubs in one world series in 1945 when he was a teen but after 2003 i dont think i or any cub fan will see them in it anytime soon. No manager has lasted more than 4 years since leo the lip and to be frank it was the last time they had a real good team not one that is hot for a year and fades. Management is the problem and it  has been mentioned until the cub fans stay away in mass management will continue to pay lip service to winning and the fans. Ryno did everything the cubs asked, improved the minor league teams he manage gained experience and then they threw him under the bus. If you do what you always do you will get what you always get and cubs management are masters at this.

Sandberg leaving Cubs

I'm loving most of these comments. The one guy I've seen change the losing Cubs culture, albeit in the minors, is Sandburg. He's developed the young talent they now have to look forward to and this is what he gets. I was a season ticket holder up until last year when I went to 1 game. Thats one more than I'll go to this year because how long can you witness the same front office mistakes and still contribute to a losing cause. I need a reason to like baseball again and the cubs will never be it. Good luck RYNO there's an opening in Milwaukee..could be interesting.

Dear Cub Fans,
The only way things are going to change for you ALL is to STOP going to Wrigley.  Ryne  Sandberg should have been named manager but ownership would have someone in a leadership position that would be very popular with players and fans,  Sandberg would have been motivated to do well.  I guess the Indians will win the WORLD SERIES before the Cubs. (Cleveland has ownership issues also)

I honestly think this is going to come back to haunt the Cubs again.  He should have either been offered the manager job or at least the 3rd base coaches job.  There will be his major league experience that would come in handy when the Cubs need another manager by the end of next season.

Hendry should be fired!!!  The Cubs are "old school" - they keep hiring these old guys rather than taking a chance on an young energetic baseball mind.  They had a chance to hire Sandberg or Girardi instead of Lou ... that worked out well.  Great decision Jim!!
