In a move people have been speculating on since Sandy Alderson took over as Mets general manager, former Dodgers GM Paul DePodesta has been hired as vice president of player development and amateur scouting. He has been a vice president with the Padres for the past two years after being hired by Alderson.

DePodesta is a pioneer in the sabermetrics movement, a former assistant to Billy Beane in Oakland. This hire, along with last week's hiring of former Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi as a special assistant to Alderson, could signal a major shift in the Mets' organizational philosophy. It definitely signals that they're spending a lot of money on executives.

Mets add DePodesta

This was seen coming a long time ago when the Mets hired Alderson.  Alderson is a great guy, probably not the best GM out there, but having DePodesta in his lineup makes a huge difference.

He did a great job rebuilding the Dodgers organization (that now is crumbling again because of the McCourts lawsuit) and in his short tenure with the Padres made them somewhat of a contender again.

The Mets play in a tough division, but hopefully with a few years and a good farm system, they can get this ball rolling again.
