D-Backs, Giants scrap Taiwan opener

Posted on: November 12, 2010 7:15 pm

Major League Baseball was unable to make a planned regular-season series in Taiwan come to fruition, as Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports via Twitter that the Diamondbacks and Giants will not open next season there.

It's not immediately clear where the negotiations broke down, but the plan had several hurdles to clear. The Diamondbacks reportedly had agreed in principle to give up two home dates, for which it would have received some compensation. The players had to vote in favor of the trip, and the players association had to sign off on it. In addition, both teams had to work out changes in spring training, which would have involved players reporting early and the loss of several high-revenue late spring training games.

Taiwan baseball is on a lower level than Korean baseball. And you think your slick because the majority of people don't understand Mandarin. But I do.

Loss revenue from spring-training games? Umm, maybe for the Giants since they just won the World Series and will be playing in it again next season against Oakland (hopefully). The main obstacle is the long trip to Taiwan and the fact that it will disrupt the precious spring training regimen. Lest we forget how MLB reacted when it allowed its employees to play in the World Baseball Classic? The result were tired arms and rusty hitters and pitchers. The first month of that season was absolutely atrocious. ERA's were quite high because pitchers had pitched too many innings in meaningless WBC games and the hitters were sluggish...to say the least.
