Despite Jose Oquendo interviewing for the Mets' manager's job tomorrow, it appears that the team is down to two -- Terry Collins and Bob Melvin, the New York Times reports .

Clint Hurdle interviewed for the job, but is apparently headed to Pittsburgh. Ken Oberkfell interviewed on Friday, but the Times writes "neither Oberkfell nor Oquendo are considered serious contenders for the job."

The Mets have also interviewed Chip Hale, Dave Jauss, Wally Backman, DeMarlo Hale and Don Wakamatsu.

Mets search down to two: Collins, Melvin

Bums? That's absurd. Honestly, Collins is well-respected as is Melvin. I can live with Terry Collins after watching the 3 stooges manage this club. Collins actually has a clue and a track record.

If anyone knows anything about the Mets they know Terry Collins has done a terrific job helping to run the minor league system. This past year he started to turn around one of the worst systems in baseball along with Wayne Krivsky. Collins is very bright and highly respected. Though he's far from a great manager, he is 444-434 life-time and in those years his teams finished 2nd each time. He's also a disciplinarian.

Perhaps Alderson, DePodesta and Ricciardi see Collins as the caretaker. This team needs a steady hand and no nonsense guy. Manuel let the inmates run wild as did Minaya. Alderson is tightening the ship and Collins is his captain. If the players get tired of him and the team fails to win, Wally Backman and Chip Hale will be there. Wally may be promoted to St.Lucie and eventually Double A or Triple A. Hale will remain 3B coach.

Rumors are that Melvin will be bench coach with Dave Jauss perhaps taking Collins old position. Tim Teufel may be brought in as 1B coach. IMO, that would be a huge upgrade. Warthen may remain pitching coach and hopefully Collins hires a batting coach to replace Hojo. Let Hojo manage Brooklyn.

The Mets in a few weeks have gone from a dysfunctional laughingstock to a professional organization. Adding a seasoned pro like Collins won't hurt that an iota. I wanted Backman, but I can live with Collins because of my respect for Alderson, who a real baseball man.

Btw, anyone who thinks the Wilpon's are running the show now is delusional. Sandy Alderson is no puppet. He only took the job if he had complete control over baseball matters. The fact he brought in Ricciardi and DePodesta proves it. It's Sandy's team now and we all should be pleased as punch. Mainya's reign of error has been replaced by sanity, intelligence and logic.

I'm ashamed to admit as a grown man I feel like kicking and screamimg and rolling on the ground ! The Mets are just a toy to the Wilpons . What can you expect from an organization that held the likes of Bernie Madoff in high regard.

The Mets are in for a very long season if they go with one of these bums.
