The owners meetings and GM meetings overlap today in Orlando, so we might see some deals happen. Here's a sampling of the chatter as the day gets under way:

* Carl Crawford would be the Yankees' Plan B if they don't sign Cliff Lee, and CC Sabathia would again be their recruiter. (Newsday)

* The Rockies want a versatile right-handed bat, with Ty Wigginton and Jorge Cantu possibilities. (

* Joel Sherman of the New York Post offers an endorsement, albeit tepid, for Bob Melvin as Mets manager. (New York Post)

* The Red Sox are making a push for Justin Upton, with the Diamondbacks likely to request Jacoby Ellsbury and Daniel Bard as the heart of the return package. (

* AL Rookie of the Year Neftali Feliz has heard the rumors about being moved to the rotation if the Rangers lose Lee, but hasn't been told anything by the team. (Hoy -- link in Spanish)

* The Yankees want Derek Jeter to sign for three years at $63 million, but Jeter is looking for as many as five or six years. (

* The Marlins have been busy, but they're not done, with Larry Beinfest saying he'd like to add a starting pitcher. (Palm Beach Post)

Thursday morning rumor roundup

I wouldn't trade you straight up for either of the players mentioned. Upton will be at best a sidenote in the annals of baseball history while Ellsbury is one of the 3 fastest men in the league right now and when he's healthy bats at least .280. (above Uptons numbers) and Bard is as good or better than Papelbon, who is viewed as one of the best closers in baseball. Somebody's smoking SOMETHING! Run Theo, run!

Thursday morning rumor roundup

I would not trade a major League everyday starter, for a player that strikesout 152 times, if they like him, look into dealing prospects, you have to wonder why Arizona would look to deal, as one poster said a future Hall of Famer, they should look to build around him if he is that good, but as always you should read the fine print.

Why are you guys assuming just because BJ might be a knucklehead, Justin is too?  As far as I know he has never caused any sort of problems in he is really young, tons of upside and not quite as fragile as Jacoby. He is a power bat, something that the Sox are missing, what would you rather have alot of steals and high average or  steals, HR's and decent average.  It shouldn't be Bard that they are including but Beckett...he is killing you guys.

How about Ellsbury/Upton straight up?  What has Upton exactly done that would make Boston willing to include Bard in the deal?  Wasn't it just 1 year ago that Ellsbury stole 70 bases and hit over .300?? And he is still young. It seems he has fallen out of favor in Boston so I can see a deal happening, but they better get good return for this guy. I certainly like Upton's possible upside, but his .272 17/69 w/152 K's stat line last year doesn't do much for me. That and the fact that he IS AN UPTON..  Hi value name, low level production!

Thursday morning rumor roundup

Again, the rumor on this kid, is million dollar talent, ten cent head! not worth Ellsbury and Bard, If he is like his brother he will be a problem in the Locker room, IF the sox want him, see if Arizona would take Buchholtz, Sox can not weaken bullpen anymore, can survive losing a starter if Beckett rebounds. should not have to wait until player gets act together.

Upton, once he gets his act together, will wind up in the Hall of Fame.  He hasn't even physically matured and his power is unbelievable, he has the ability to be the second coming of players like Eric Davis or a young Barry Bonds.  People arguing that he's not worth trading for a player whose main attribute is speed - when he's healthy - and a guy who throws hard but hasn't developed a reliable off speed pitch simply haven't seen him play on a day in, day out basis.  If it was just Ellsbury and Bard this deal would already be done, it can only be all the additional prospects Arizona wants that is holding this up.  Back up the bus and give them whatever they want, the kid is 23 years old and can be the centerpiece of your offense for the next ten years.

BMACREDSOX I do not know what your looking for from Ellsbury, but I think your off base, you need him at the top of your line up every day They won 89 games with a AAA line up, how many more would they have won if a healthy Ellsbury was in the line up, He was hurt, because red sox brass screwed up, now I can't say he would have been healthy, all year but he would have been in the line up more than 18 games. you may  question  why he was not working out with the club while on DL,  I don't know , HE is not a guy thats going to hit 20 homers a year, he does not play in Yankee Stadium, but he will score a 100 runs, bat around 300 and give you above avg range in centerfield, yes I know his arm is weak, but I will take range over assist. I have nothing against Upton, and it would be nice to have both of them in the same line up with JD Drew moving on after next season. again give up the farm but not anybody who is in your starting line up, who other teams want.

My goodness.  Let's be real here people.  Jacoby Ellsbury has done almost nothing substantial for this club.  Throw all the stats you want at me it doesn't equal the meat and potatoes.  Daniel Bard is the player that would hurt getting rid of but he is still pretty much an unknown.  Justin Upton would be a nice score for the sox and the front office shouldn't blink at throwing Ellsbury into the package.  Justin is young and he produces where it counts!

I know a lot of people are down on Ellsbury, but if Theo did not pull a bonehead move by having him play&n
bsp;leftfield, he would not have crushed his Ribs this guy is a tremendous defensive centerfielder, and can run like a deer, can't remember having a leadoff hitter of that caliber, it would be a huge mistake to trade Ellsbury.

I agree. Bard is the future of an already depleated bullpen. I wouldn't deal him straight up for Upton, nevermind throwing in Els (who should be on the table)
