Could Indians sign Zach Duke?

Duke Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer tweets that he wouldn't be surprised if the Indians signed Zach Duke to a contract after the lefty was designated for assignment by Pittsburgh.

Duke will likely come on a very low base salary as he's coming off a season with a 5.72 ERA, 5.4 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 mark.

The 27-year-old has put together some decent back-of-the-rotation seasons, but unless something changes drastically, asking Duke to play in the American League seems like a stretch.

Duke throws strikes and induces groundballs, but can't do much else. In a pitcher's park in the National League and his head screwed on straight, it's not impossible to imagine him stringing together a few solid seasons. Unless the Indians think they can fix him and improve him, however, Duke's only value to the team would be to serve as an innings eater.

Could Indians sign Zach Duke?

What is sad is the Indians front office.  Zack Duke?  I dont think its a bad deal if he signs for a low contract.  But how does Dan Haren get traded for nothing with two years left and the Indians were not interested in him. If the front oddice has any common sense, they will trade Carmona.  Yeah, he had a decent season, but he will never be great.  No great pitchers have as low as a K9 as him.  Trade him while he has some value.  Take a chance of Webb.  I would love to see him in Cleveland.  If it is true both Uptons are available go after them.  Along with Garza.  Beckman would be nice, but the price might be too steep. Sizemore could be done, which sucks.  Got to love the MLB.  No salary cap so all the best FAs goto New York, Boston or LA.  Small market teams cant afford any mistakes, like the Indians.  We might be able to add someone if we didnt have to pay Hafner 13 million a year.  Seriusly, when is the MLB going to have a salary cap and non-guranteed contracts.  The sport would be so much better.  Look at the NFL.  Tampa Bay is 7-3 after drafting 3rd overall.  It sucks to be an MLB fan when you know the Indians, or Royals, or Pirates will suck for 162 games.  Who is going to show up?  Really sad for the greatest sport ever.  Bud Selig sucks.

Could Indians sign Zach Duke?

For this sorry franchise - Sandy Koufax would blow out an arm, Don Drysdale would be kept in the minors to preserve his pre-arbitration years, Cy Young would be held to a 170 innings pitch count, and Babe Ruth would be traded for a Broadway musical

Could Indians sign Zach Duke?

A few years ago he was one of the young up an coming pitchers the Pirates had made a big deal of. Duke and Ian Snell were suppose to lead the Pirates to the glory days. Too bad even Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Cy Young, and Babe Ruth could not save this sorry franchise.
