Victor Martinez The first big free-agent signing of the offseason may be coming soon, as ESPNdeportes' Ignacio Serrano reports Victor Martinez is close to a four-year, $50 million deal with the Tigers.

Martinez will return to the American League Central, where he played for the Indians from 2002 to 2009, when he was traded to the Red Sox.

Martinez hit .302/.351/.493 with 20 home runs for the Red Sox last season and is a career .300/.369/.469 hitter.

The Tigers have money to spare, with several big contracts coming off the books for 2011. The team announced earlier in the day that they would not be offering arbitration to their five free agents, Magglio Ordonez, Johnny Damon, Jeremy Bonderman, Bobby Seay and Gerald Laird.

Report: Martinez to Tigers

A good hitting catcher? He is a great hitting catcher and in his prime. I just wish our Superstar Venezuelans would bring an entourage of Venezuelan beach babes up to the States with them.

Report: Martinez to Tigers

I am a huge Sox fan and I am embarrassed by the comments from a few (not all) Red Sox fans, yes Victor Martinez is worth 50 million Dollars Detroit this will work out for you, you got a very good player today! All Theo did today is weaken a team, for my negative posting Sox fans go back and look at the sox free agents signings the last five years Renterra,Lugo,Dice K, Lackey, they did hit on Beltre but have no interest in resigning him. I could go on, but what the point.

The Tigers do have alot of money coming off the books, but I dont understand this signing.  VMart is a good hitting catcher, but he is declining and therefore is not worth this money.   To be fair, I would rather have VMart than Jeter and Jeter is going to get a few million more per year than this.....  Dombrowski makes horrible moves every year, surrounds his team with nothing and then the Tigers fans moan about Leyland.  Leyland may not be a great manager, but look at this team..  Bringing back brandon Inge is stupid..  They get no productivity out of the infield at all other than Cabrera...  Martinez is more of a DH and if he is gonna DH there, he needs to hit 30+ HR's and drive in 115 to earn his money....  I see this as a move that Tigers fans will regret once the season starts.  This is more of a last resort move if you didn't land anyone you wanted than a headliner free agent move to me....

He is not worth 50 Million because you didnt sign him. Typical Sox fan, if we sign him its great but if someone else signs one of our players than it must suck.

REDSOXWON your saying  V-mart will not be productive in two years! how does anybody know he won't still be catching in two or three years, and if he has to DH in his fourth year so be it! Varatek is 39 was he productive at 34,35and 36, What is going to happen when Salty comes up with runners in scoring position, and can't hit the ball out of the infield, what is the % number of throwing out runners you would like to see, like i said before, it not just on V-Mart, its on the pitchers too

Laird can go somewhere being a bouncer in a bar along with his meat head brother--he stunk big time. Decent signing since they will have a catcher who can actually hit a ball. From a pure bat though, I'd prefer Dunn--anyone else have any other thoughts?
