Victor Martinez The first big free-agent signing of the offseason may be coming soon, as ESPNdeportes' Ignacio Serrano reports Victor Martinez is close to a four-year, $50 million deal with the Tigers.

Martinez will return to the American League Central, where he played for the Indians from 2002 to 2009, when he was traded to the Red Sox.

Martinez hit .302/.351/.493 with 20 home runs for the Red Sox last season and is a career .300/.369/.469 hitter.

The Tigers have money to spare, with several big contracts coming off the books for 2011. The team announced earlier in the day that they would not be offering arbitration to their five free agents, Magglio Ordonez, Johnny Damon, Jeremy Bonderman, Bobby Seay and Gerald Laird.

This would be an awesome signing for the Tigers.  Anytime you can sign a switch-hitting catcher that hits over .300 on a yearly basis, you are doing the right thing.  And while his defense is often criticized, he does more than enough to make this a smart decision.

Carl Crawford should be the only free agent that the Tigers attack. Without him it'll be more of the same next year.

I assume this means Crawford is already slated to be an Angel.

$12M+ is way too much for this guy, but I like not having to watch Laird and Avila take turns whiffing all of next year.

I don't know.  I still think the Red Sox may have something to say about this deal. Or at least they should.

Wonderful, maybe we can just let Beltre walk too.  How about just getting rid of everyone who kept us competitive during the slew of injuries last season?  Let's just trade Buchholz and Lester, and maybe sign Pap to a long term deal.

Theo's shrewdness is beginning to get a little annoying to this Red Sox fan.

We don't need another first baseman/DH - i'd rather see them sign Maggs than Dunn

definitely a move forward on a position that has been lacking, Avila is not the full time answer at catcher.

Hopefully they'll use more of that "money to spare" to sign Dunn
