Possible Mets-Diamondbacks blockbuster?

Carlos Beltran
A report from a Puerto Rican newspaper says the Mets and Diamondbacks are considering a monster trade. It seems like a pretty unlikely scenario, but hey, the word "rumors" is right in the title of this blog, so it's our duty to report it.

According to El Nuevo Dia (link in Spanish), Puerto Rico's biggest paper, the deal would have the Mets sending outfielder Carlos Beltran, shortstop Jose Reyes and top pitching prospect Jenrry Mejia to Arizona in exchange for outfielder Justin Upton and shortstop Stephen Drew.

I'm not sure this has any legs, at least unless there's a lot more to the details, because Mets general manager Sandy Alderson would have jumped all over it. Upton is signed for five more years at a reasonable price and Drew is under club control for two more years. And the Mets would be dumping $18.5 million in salary for Beltran and $11 million for Reyes, with both due to be free agents after next season.

The only way this would presumably work would be for the Mets to send a boatload of money to the Diamondbacks in the deal, but even so, I don't know why Kevin Towers would do it. He's supposedly been asking for a huge package of players for Upton alone, so it doesn't make sense that he'd move both of his best young players for Mejia and two expiring contracts.

Possible Mets-Diamondbacks blockbuster?

Kevin Towers is not a genius. If he was he would not have gotten run out of San Diego as its GM. The guy is not much smarter than Jim Hendry. Neither have delivered a championship to their former or current teams.
You know I have seen stranger trades before. I still remember when Oakland gave up Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin in return for a bunch of low prospects....Sean Gallagher, Josh Donaldson, Matt Murton and Corey Patterson. Lol...where are they now? They certainly aren't starting at the big league level nor are they even on the A's AAA team. They have either been injured of terrible. Many A's fans thought the trade was a stupid one and wondered how Beane could make such a one sided trade. So, in that respect, this rumored trade does not surprise me. Anything can happen when a trade involves a desperate GM. Yes, Kevin Towers is one desperate GM. He never won anything in his life. And yet he promised the owners who hired him that he will deliver them a championship within 2 years. Yeah right!

Possible Mets-Diamondbacks blockbuster?

How does CBSsports get away with printing this bs all the time.  All they do is talk out their arss everyday in hopes of getting some kind of attention.  It's bad enough they have the worst columnist in sports, but they have to constantly lie in order to get people to look at their site.  CBS sports, stop hiring guys like Larry Dumbrow and Pete Prisco and then maybe you might actually get the attention you crave so much, but until then you will just be ESPN's little whore they never even take out to dinner.

People need to remember a couple things. One Beltran is a mediocre outfielder now, and both Reyes and Beltran have not been healthy since 2007. We're going into 2011 with both guys being average at their positions. This deal is realistic given the value of what the D'Backs is giving is more than what the Mets is giving.

This is the kind of trade that gets people kicked out of their fantasy leagues.  I'd love to see what it did to a real life GM.

I can see the Mets unloading Beltran and Reyes, but not in the same deal to one team.   Reyes would be a huge loss for the Mets; not so with Beltran who's been invisible for 2 years, and whose off-season behavior was weird.   Maybe the Yankees would take a bite on availability of Reyes to try and scare Jeter's agent.

Don't believe the Mets would jettison Angel Pagan right now since he's only going to improve.  Davis needs another season in NY for Mets evaluation and possible long-tem in Mets uniform.

Anyway, where do these stories get dreamed up?

Not even a D-back fan & I'm rolling with laughter.

If the D-Backs were to do this every D-Back fan should turn in their tickets because the GM would be the dumbest man on the face of the planet!

Everymove this team has made in the last 2-3 years has backfired.

It would only show that Reyes & Beltran's careers are over or else the Mets would keep them.

I only wish that I could be drinking the same drink these rumor mill guys get their hands on. The kool-aid I drank said Davis & Reyes to Giants for Rowand & Zito. Right up there on the making sense moves. If these rumors are possible that means the DBacks will finish last for at leat the lengths of these guys contracts. Hard to get solid stats from guys on the DL. I am all for it not being a dback fan,

i heard the diamondbacks are likely to demand either ike davis or angel pagan instead of beltran. which would likely mean the mets wouldnt do it. besides, upton is coming off an up and down year. i cant see his value being high enough right now for the mets to give up a lot and for the d'backs to have a sort of knee-jerk reaction and trade him.

This makes zero sense for the Diamonbacks, which likely means they'll do it.
