Lee The Rangers are prepared to make an offer to keep star left-handed starter Cliff Lee, reports the New York Post .

The team is willing to go to five years to retain Lee, but it's not clear if five years will be in the original tender. Lee is thought to have a five- or six-year offer in hand from New York, and Texas believes New York will pay Lee $23 million a year.

The Rangers already know they can't top that average annual salary, but are hoping the absence of a state tax and proximity to his Arkansas home will be selling points. Club officials are split on whether Lee will return.

Texas has already prepared backup plans for Lee, although one of them likely dissipated when Jorge de la Rosa chose to return to Colorado. That may be why the Rangers want a resolution shortly, so other backup plans (Zack Greinke?) remain feasible.

I understand what you are saying, but it's business.  Players want to win, and who really would turn down the yankees. Its a little different to me, the miami heat, is not even in the same conversation as the yankees.  He is been traded and swapped around as a trading piece.  It is Lees time to go where he can make the most money and win...;)

Just sign with the Yankees and get it over with......you know that's where he's going. In fact, why doesn't MLB just eliminate every team except for the Yankees and the Red Sox and then they can just play each other every day. Do we really need the other teams in the league for anything else but talent manufacturers for the Yankmees and the Rod Sox to rob from every offseason?
Poop on Cliff Lee if he goes to the Evil Empire.

Don't have an owner??? what rock have you been under?? Greenburg/Ryan group bought the team after a well publicized court hearing where Mark Cuban tried to out bid them.

Rangers prepared to offer five years to Lee

Hopefully the days of the Yankees cherry picking players is over.  They have no excitement whatsoever, very boring to watch.  Did you see how exciting the Rangers were to watch during the playoffs?  Texas is the 2nd youngest team in baseball with plenty of talent remaining in the minors.  And for the record redrt88, the Rangers do have an owner (actually a few of them) and one of them is a pretty good guy that is running the show.  You may have heard of him....Nolan Ryan.

It seems these days that players don't sign with the Yankees for the pride of playing for a team with such a great history, but rather the ultimate promotion to the highest paying job. And it seems the Yankees will buy out any player considered to be the best available free agent, even if that player isn't so great. What a turn the world has taken.

Hard to believe this guy was sent down to the minors because of his struggles while in Cleveland.  He has blossomed into the most sought after free agent of the year and I agree with the other post, he has a difficult choice.  Texas may not be worth much in a year or two and they dont even have an owner so philosophies could change.  The Yankees will always contend.  I think too that he will be a Yankee.

i feel bad for lee - he has a lack of options. he could take the easy way out, and sign with the yankees, make bank, win a few rings, but wouldn't he seem like a guy who almost cheated? its almost like the lebron situation, where he could choose the heat, put will be ridiculed. if he chooses texas, he goes for an iffy situation of whether or not he will win. its tough. i feel for the guy. i loved him during his year in philly, and i know that he is a hard worker and couldn't live with taking the easy way out.

Lee will end up a pin striper, it's just a matter of when he and the Yankees decide to stop yankin everyones chain and playing with peoples head making everyone go, oh my god will he sign with Texas or New York, simple he has already made his decision, he just wants to make everyone play the waiting game!!!!
