Yankees poised to make big offer for Lee

Lee The Cliff Lee market is about to get blown up with the inclusion of the Yankees' offer.

New York isn't willing to go seven years (yet) for Cliff Lee as two other mystery teams have done so far, but GM Brian Cashman is gearing up to make a big six-year offer that lands in the $140 million to $150 million range as SI.com's Jon Heyman reports. That would place an average annual salary of $23 million to $25 million on the deal, which would make him the second-highest paid pitcher in history when looking at AAV. Current Yankee CC Sabathia has $23 million on the nose, which Lee likely will eclipse. The highest-paid pitcher is Roger Clemens and his ridiculous $28 million AAV for the Yankees in 2007, although the deal was pro-rated as Clemens signed in midseason.

The Rangers probably can't hang with Lee on the total numbers, but president Nolan Ryan expressed optimism that the club could retain Lee, saying that he values winning which may make the seven-year offers -- depending on which teams offered them, of course -- invalid. In addition, Texas has no state tax which would allow it to make lower offers but still hang with the Yankees on total actual dollars.

Here's Joe Girardi talking about Lee and Derek Jeter:

Its a real shame how Baseball sold out.  Unless a team is located in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and I guess now Washington, there's really no hope a big free agent will sign with another team.  The sad part is that MLB will not implement any type of free agency because as long as corporations are willing to give MLB millions and millions of dollars to support teams like the Yankees, Bud Selig will continue to promote these big market teams.  This is why baseball sucks now.

You are the one who sounds like your crying! Get over it. The Yankees play by the rules and contribute more luxury tax $$$ than some teams spend on payroll. Every sports fan would love to have the Steinbrenners!

I cant wait till Lee and Doughnut Dude Sabathia are 38 yrs old and costing the team $50mil....

3 rings or so later, I think I can deal with that. All the $16 beers at the stadium in between will be rough on my budget though. That's why I sneak a few cans into the stadium every game.

Salary cap! Salary cap!   WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! You people are idiots.Baseball does not need a salary cap (and besides,it will never have one regardless). Look how many different teams have won the WS this decade. What baseball needs is more owners who give a damn about their product and are willing to put the money they already have plus the money they get from revenue sharing back into their own teams instead of their own pockets. The NFL and the NBA are boring BECAUSE of the salary cap.

These stupid idiot yankee fans just need to buy another championship... You should hear this idiots calling up talk radio.. They ask questions like this: Mike why don't the yankees trade Granderson and Wood for Cliff Lee before the year started.. Now they just want to buy Lee because their team sucks and they have no chance of winning a championship with a 220 million dollars payroll... Lets see what we should do.. Lets buy a World Series Ring every year for the thanks because that what they do.. They buy championships.. They don't earn Championships..They buy them... It is a sad day for other teams... I hope he goes to Texas.. I don't even like Texas but I hope he stays down there... And then the Yankees can cry all day again. Not getting all the top free agents.... WHIney Whiney Yankee Fans... Cry me a river... LOosers....

YnkeeH8r, I couldn't agree with you more.  It's an absolute joke to smaller funded teams.  I live in Wisconsin and am a Brewers fan and was hoping that they could have somehow retained Sabathia.  The Brewers offered him $100 mil contract, and for the Brewers that was HUGE money.  But the Yankees wanted him and told him they would give him 40% more than his biggest offer.  It's a joke.  I can't believe there isn't a salary cap in baseball

LOL.... Go Yankees.... I cant wait till Lee and Doughnut Dude Sabathia are 38 yrs old and costing the team $50mil.
Yankees fans should face it,,, contracts like these are the reason why they dont win the WS as often as their talent level indicates that they should.....
Are they still paying Jason Giambi $25mil to inject himself full of HGH?

If MLB doesn't want a salary cap, it's time to just turn it into two separate leagues: Haves and Have Nots. This is becoming a joke.
