Red Sox likely to sign Downs

Downs Now that the Red Sox will lose their first-round pick for outfielder Carl Crawford, the club may not be as leery of signing reliever Scott Downs.

AOL Fanhouse's Ed Price hears that teams believe the Red Sox will ink the lefty. Downs emerged as one of the best left-handed relievers in the game for the Blue Jays over the last several years. However, as a Type-A free agent, he would have cost Boston its first-round pick. That's chilled his market, but now that he would only cost a second-round selection, Boston figures to be more interested in Downs.

Helping matters is the Red Sox are hold the Tigers' first-rounder for signing Victor Martinez and will also obtain a pick for Adrian Beltre, giving the team two first-round picks and two supplemental first-round picks as well.

He doesn't close.  Great pitcher - and not a smoke thrower at all.

He should have been moved at the deadline.

The only glaring need remaining for the Sox. Relievers are tough to gauge from year to year, but Downs has been 1 of the few steady one's. Kudos if they can get this deal done. It's been Christmas all month long (since the AGonz deal) for Sox fans. To think that they could have 99% of their offseason business done by end of the week!!!   Awesome job management!

Whitetrash17, I'm really happy that Lopez worked out well for you guys BUT he just plain stunk in Boston and thats why he was let go. Maybe the change of scenery did him some good, the 1st year he was with the Sox he was ok but he kind of lost it after that.

Could'nt agree more.  Good left-handed starting or relief pitching goofs up hitters more than 100mph fastballs.  The Yanks would do themselves a real service by getting serious with Downs and his agent.  Mo is not going to play forever and the Yankees have one glaring need in their bullpen... good left-handed relief.  Otherwise the Yankees don't need much more for a run at the pennant and World Series.  A role player here and there that can hit a bit.  Gardner and Granderson run well, Jeter and A-Rod still can a bit.  So more speed really isn't neccessary when you are knocking the ball out of the park and off the walls.  I look for Jeter to hit better this year...really an off year for him but we think he has at least 3 more good years left.  The Yanks will be better in 2011 with Lee and a better hitting Jeter and the Yanks were pretty in 2010.

This is the player the Yankees really need to go after. The Yankees were very short on left handed relief pitching last season aside from Logan & in a way Rivera (whose cutter kills lefties more than righties). We need Downs or at least another solid lefty reliever pronto.

Toronto will miss Downs. He was outstanding the last few seasons. Boston will be getting someone who can close as well as set up for either Bard or Papelbon. Boston is really looking to get back into the post season and if they get Downs, they are really upgrading their bulpen.
