Rangers make offer to Lee

Rangers owner Chuck Greenberg just called an unscheduled teleconference, leading to speculation a major announcement was forthcoming. Had the Rangers signed Lee? Were they giving up after hearing his latest demands? Twitter was atwitter with anticipation.

Turns out it was nothing. OK, not nothing, but nothing unexpected. Greenberg said, via Anthony Andro of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram , that the Rangers made an offer to Lee, and that Lee is "weighing options." Greenberg had traveled to Lee's Arkansas home Thursday to meet with the pitcher and agent Darek Braunecker. It's unknown whether this is the Rangers' first formal offer, but it's their first acknowledgement of one.

Greenberg would give no details about the length or terms of the offer, but said he was "optimistic." The Yankees are believed to have made Lee a seven-year offer earlier in the day.

VIDEO UPDATE: Where will Cliff Lee sign?

Rangers make offer to Lee

Nolan Ryan was  better than any pitcher that'd ever worn pinstripes.
Nolan ryan was a great pitcher but i'd take whitey ford over nolan ryan

Fords era is almost half a run better for his carear.

Among pitchers with at least 300 career decisions, Ford ranks first with a winning percentage of .690, the all-time highest percentage in modern baseball history.  The Yankees were 1,486-1,027 during his 16 years; without his 236 wins and 106 losses, they had 1,250 wins and 921 losses, for a won-loss percentage of .576. Ford was thus 11.4 percentage points higher than his team's record, independent of his record.

Nolan ryan is only 32 games over 500 as a pitcher and has almost 300 losses.  he played for like almost 30 years....  he was at times unhittable when the moon and stars all lined up... but more often then not he was not as good as some think based by his 7 no hitters.    nol
an ryan was great for strike outs but unless we are talking about a k with a runner on 3rd and less then two outs (where the runner can score on a ball in play) then a K is pretty much the same result as a normal out.  so big deal.  k's are overrated and he walked the world. hitters had a career .309 on base % vs him, thats not even in the top 100 pitchers

pete rose or ted williams?  one played for ever and has more hits but who would you take?  nolan ryan has 300 wins cause he played 27 years!!!!  lol he has like 290 losses too

Whitey Ford and Mariano Riveria (yes I know he's a closer) I'd take over Nolan Ryan.

Rangers make offer to Lee

Yeah the Rangers never have mattered much of anything in Dallas. Whatever they did before this generated slightly less buzz than the High School football season. They're a distant third in popularity and meaning behind the Cowboys (obviously) and even Dirk's Mavs.

As for Lee, I would normally say it's okay to take the money and run BUT...remember the reports of Yankee fans seriously harassing his wife during the ALCS? If that was my wife, I'd say "screw you, you blew your chance." Money rules in baseball more than any other sport, otherwise Lee would flip them the bird and head to whoever gives him the best chance to win (Boston, followed by Texas), because you know he's making at leeeeeast 20 mil a year for at least 5 years.

If Cliff Lee has an ounce of integrity to his being he will decide to stay with the Rangers.

why?  what does he owe the rangers?  this is a pathetic statement.
