Rangers owner Chuck Greenberg just called an unscheduled teleconference, leading to speculation a major announcement was forthcoming. Had the Rangers signed Lee? Were they giving up after hearing his latest demands? Twitter was atwitter with anticipation.

Turns out it was nothing. OK, not nothing, but nothing unexpected. Greenberg said, via Anthony Andro of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram , that the Rangers made an offer to Lee, and that Lee is "weighing options." Greenberg had traveled to Lee's Arkansas home Thursday to meet with the pitcher and agent Darek Braunecker. It's unknown whether this is the Rangers' first formal offer, but it's their first acknowledgement of one.

Greenberg would give no details about the length or terms of the offer, but said he was "optimistic." The Yankees are believed to have made Lee a seven-year offer earlier in the day.

Rangers make offer to Lee

"The Union and his agent will tell him it's best for baseball and your fellow player, do whats best for us! CC had more reason not to go there (you know, the west coast 'family') but sold out, so will Lee. SAD SAD SAD"

The yankees had to pay a very large amount more for CC than he would have taken to go to Angels where he wanted to play and the yankees bought him even though he didnt want too but hey they got there man then.

This situation is different and they might have to pay a crazy amount to make up for the difference in that NY has a state tax and TX does not. If his first choice is TX then Yankees will have to severely overpay for him. I personally think he is just waiting for the Yankees to take a stance and offer him a huge number, I mean why would he hurry if the Yankees keep upping the dollar amount. One thing is Nolan Ryan is one competitive son of a bitch and I would not be suprised if he decides he does not want to lose out to cashman, plus that would just be so much to see cashman speechless. It would also leave Boston as heavy favorites to win the east.

but honest question, how will you Yankees fans feel about the off season so far if the Rangers sign Cliff Lee, Right now I know they are not done yet but if there going to get someone big it will be via the trade.

At what ceiling is too much? Seven years guarenteed is too much for the Rangers. They'd be better off spending on the Latin league then a possible loss on Lee.  Especially since I heard they want to cap spending at 90 mil. 90 mil? What happened to We are going to spend more in Arlingtion? The Yanks can afford to toss money around but not the Rangers.  90 mil? That's like one guy for the Yankers.

Lee will sign with the Yankees cause the Union tells Lee to sign with Yankees. We all hold out hope that the guy will understand what the fans want and lose a couple mil (how horrible) to sign with a decent team. The Union and his agent will tell him it's best for baseball and your fellow player, do whats best for us! CC had more reason not to go there (you know, the west coast 'family') but sold out, so will Lee. SAD SAD SAD.

It"ll never happen. Yankees will top any offer. Must react to Red Sox signings. Also, Pettitte has not decided on retirement.

If Lee had a set and was willing to take a chance, he'd sign with the Rockies.
