Cards send SS to Seattle

Brendan Ryan Shortstop Brendan Ryan has been traded to the Mariners for minor-league right-hander Maikel Cleto.

The Cardinals had been shopping the slick-fielding, no-hit shortstop with the Twins among those interested, before sending him to Seattle. Ryan hit .223/.279/.294 with two home runs and 36 RBI in 139 games for the Cardinals last season (so he'll fit right in with the Mariners). The team acquired Ryan Theriot, who will be their starting shortstop this season.

Cleto is a 21-year old Dominican who was 4-9 with a 6.16 ERA a Class A High Desert of the California League. Cleto struck out 83 and walked 44, while allowing 125 hits in 102/ 2/3 innings last season. He can throw in the high-90s, but doesn't do much else as a pitcher.

UPDATE: "Cleto has a power arm that at times has reached 100," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said (via Bernie Miklasz on Twitter ). "He's someone that could project as a back of the bullpen talent with additional development and experience."

Cards send SS to Seattle

Kind of hate to see B. Ryan go. He was a super vacuum in the field. He gives leather a good name...but ash and maple were not very kind to him. Ocassionally the opposing pitcher would accidentally hit his bat and he'd get a single or double out of it. He reminds me a lot of Cardinals' SS Dal Maxvill from the 60's...catch anything on the left side of the field....but couldn't touch anything near home plate.

He made a nice attitude adjustment over the past couple of years, but I don't think her ever got completely out of Tony LaRussa's dog house. I wish him luck. Don't know enough about Cleto make a comment. Guess we'll find out in a couple of years...or sooner.

Cards send SS to Seattle

I hope Brendan has continued success in Seattle. He is a great defensive SS, but his lack of hitting pretty much cemented that he would be leaving town. Especially after the pickup of Ryan Theriot. The Cards struggled so badly last year with getting guys on base, especially at the top of the lineup. You can't have Ryan and Schumaker both hitting under .240. Then there is no one to get on base for the big bats. Hopefully Theriot can help fix that problem, as well as Rasmus, leaving possibility of Pujols/Holliday/Berkman to drive in some runs.
