Nationals interested in Derrek Lee

Lee The Nationals are on the hunt for a first-baseman and while earlier reports had the club interested in Adam LaRoche, that isnt the only first baseman the Nats are looking at.

The club is interested in Derrek Lee (pictured), who would provide an impact defensive first baseman who can hit for power in the middle of the lineup, as MLB.com reports. Lee may also bounce back from a season that saw him jettisoned to Atlanta from the Cubs and struggling with a thumb injury that required surgery.

The two aren't the only possibilities for first, however. GM Mike Rizzo said he is not ruling anything out when speaking about the position after losing out on free agent Carlos Pena.

"We will explore both options, so it expands our pool a little bit more," Rizzo said. "I don't ever want to feel rushed to do a deal. I think when you feel rushed to do a deal, you make a deal that you may not have wanted to do. So we are going to look at our options. We feel there are still good options out there, and we will see where they take us."
You have no idea. I just don't understand the National's front office decicions. I was all for resigning Dunn. Yeah Werth is better defensively and Dunn strikes out a ton, but I really liked what I saw with the Willingham, Zimmerman and Dunn trio. With Bryce Harper coming along a 7-year deal makes no sense at all. Do they really think he's going to put up numbers close to last year or the year before that?

And now I hear we're going after Derrek f'in Lee? Again, 3-time GG winner so pretty good defensively, but I don't understand how his .260 average from last season is going to help. Assuming we sign him, both "big" pickups we made this offseason are overpaid bums whose best years are behind them.

Yeah, like he would have chosen us instead of Boston...

Awesome to be a nationals fan- you just signed an overrated 32 yr old outfielder to one of the largest contracts in history-- do you really think in 7 years you will be reaping the rewards of Jason Werth's lifetime 272 avg... whose best year came in a contract year- hitting in a little league ballpark. And now you want to sign an antiquated first basemen whose best years are way way way behind... good luck! You did upgrade defensively with Werth, but you need quality defense up the middle, strong OBP type players and someone to hit behind zimmerman... but werth is not worth the money! SHould have gone after adrian gonzalez!
