Cards to sign Laird as backup

Posted on: December 14, 2010 8:49 am
Just to point out all the news isn't Cliff Lee news, the Cardinals agreed to terms with free-agent catcher Gerald Laird to back up Yadier Molina, Sports Illustrated 's Jon Heyman reports .'s Matt Leach reports the deal isn't done, but that doesn't mean it won't be.

Laird, 31, hit .207/.263/.304 for the Tigers last season, but the Cardinals have always looked for a defensive catcher as their backup. Laird is considered excellent behind the plate. And with as much as Molina plays (he's started at least 130 games each of the last two seasons), offense can be secondary for the backup.

A bum? That's a personality trait, not a baseball ascription. Is he a weak hitter? Yep. No argument that he's a liability at the plate. But could still be a real nice guy rather than a bum!

I think back-up catcher is the last position I would worry about for the Cardinals...and most other teams. There are few back-up catchers with exciting numbers at the plate...that's why they're back-ups. If they were decent hitters and had a decent glove, they'd probably be on somebody's starting roster. If Molina were to be hurt and out of the lineup for an extended period of time, I would anticipate the Cardinals would make a move to acquire someone who could perform at least as a lower-tier starter.

Bum? Who are you? Not a reader, obviously - it's so hard to teach comprehension to nonmotivated students. He was signed as a backup catcher for his glove, not his bat.

LaRussa loves defensive catchers, but he also loves homeruns and rbi production.  This guy can provide defense, but he can't provide offense.  Don't look for him to play much at all.  He'll just be insurance.  But if Molina gets an injury where he has to spend much time on the dl, the Cardinals will make a trade for a new catcher.
