Yankees agree to deal with Russell Martin

Posted on: December 14, 2010 11:00 am

Russell Martin Hey Yankee fans, it's not Cliff Lee, but the team does now have Russell Martin. So, well, there is that.

The deal has been int he works for days and is far from unexpected, but MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez tweets the deal may be official later today.

Jorge Posada is expected to move to designated hitter and Martin will join super-prospect Jesus Montero to take care of the Yankees' catching duties.

While there are few doubts Montero's bat is ready, his skills behind the plate have been questioned, but with Martin and Posada, the Yankees are covered if he's a disaster behind the plate.

Yankees agree to deal with Russell Martin

The J. Martin on his jersey stands for 'Jeanson' which is his mother's maiden name. I don't quite think it makes him a douche, but it is nominally confusing. One of his many middle names is actually Coltrane, which would be much more entertaining to see on his jersey than the 'J'.

As for the impact of the signing, even though he's only 27, Martin appears to be junk. He's gotten worse in every year since his breakout '07. But what can you expect from a guy who foregoes offseason training so that he can play Turtle on Entourage?

I'm just glad I won't have to see...

that stupid "J. Martin" on his jersey anymore.  I'm sure there's a touching story behind it and all, but your name is Russell.  Try to be less of a douche.
From the roster perspective, looks like this guy could be a midseason DFA candidate, once Montero settles in.  The Yankees already have a light hitting catcher who is good at defense.  His name is Francisco Cervelli.  Maybe the Yankees are planning on trading Cervelli, but I don't really see the need/use for this guy.

No chance Seattle trades Felix.  Yankee fans must think this is like fantasy baseball, trade for anyone you'd like for some unproven prospects, not gonna happen.

Yankees agree to deal with Russell Martin

You're out of your freaking mind if you think Seattle will trade Felix for anybody. He's under contract for another four years and there isn't a package of prospects anywhere that would equal his value. The Yankees are free to inquire all they want but that doesn't mean anything will come of it. It would take either an epic act of stupidity or virtually a team's entire farm system for Jack Zduriencik to even think about unloading Felix until the final year of his deal.

This gives the Yankees flexibility to trade Montero.  Martin would be primary catcher with Posada filling in occassionally.  Montero is great but since the Yankees were unable to sign Lee I see them putting a package together with Montero to get Felix Hernandez from Seattle.  Seattle wanted Montero for Lee last summer but took Smoak and some other lower level prospects instead.  Seattle has no catching prospects and Montero is the best out there.  I think Cashman goes after the biggest arm via trade and that would be King Felix.
Losing Montero would be a little dissappointing but we have a better all around catching prospect in the minors so Russell Martin can fill the void till he is ready.  Go get Felix!

Who are Gaints? As far as the Yankees being 4th best in the MLB isn't that what they want to be in order to make the playoffs? Boston is probably on paper the best team in MLB but who else is better? The Rays just lost Crawford,Rangers lost Lee, and Anaheim and Minnesota didn't get any better so I am trying to figure out who you think is a better team besides the Red Sox in the AL that would keep them from competing for a title? In the NL I would say the Phils(1 l when shortening the Phillies name btw) pitching is superior but there lineup is not. The Giants have a great staff and all but again there line-up is not any better. I hate the Yankees but they always seem to be in the discussion come playoff time and that is all that really matters.

Yankees agree to deal with Russell Martin

Actually the lower market teams have been forced by Major League baseball to start spending money. the MLBPA had filed a grievance about the Marlins and the Pirates about how they dont spend enough money and that they are collecting the revenue-sharing money and not utilizing it to make their teams better. The marlins owner has already stated that their budget will increase when they move into their new stadium.  The pirates total salary might not be very high, but they have been using the revenue sharing money to sign their draft picks and build up their ability to sign international players.  They are not letting a player in the drafts salary demands get in the way anymore.  I'm also sure that as the Pirates core players , McCutchen, Alvarez, Tabata, Walker, all start reaching arbitration their Total Salary will increase.

Yankee fans come on please get real!!!!!!  You just became at best the 4th best team in basebal.  Far behind The Red Sox, Gaints and Phills.  Your line-up can't touch the Red Sox's new additions and your pitching is LIGHT YEARS away from the Gaints and Phills.  Only Sabathia could make either of those rotations.  Another piece of bad news Russell Martin is not going to change any of that.  I'm a life long Dodger fan (another team going no place next year), and have watched Martin for his whole career.  He is a shell of the all-star he once was.  His defense the last few years has been shakey at best, espacially throwing out runners.   His best contribuations have always been his offensive game, which has been nothing for several years now as well.  And this was before a broken hip!!!!!  One posting has him hitting 20 home runs next year LOL are you kidding!!!!!!!!  He hasn't hit 20 in the last 3 years combined!!!!!  He was actually a life long minor leaguer who probably got on roids for a few seasons and hit 20 + home runs, cashed in and quit taking them before testing caught him.  The league is full of them now.
