Renteria 'disrespected' by Giants' $1M offer

Renteria "That offer from the Giants was a lack of respect. A total disrespect," Edgar Renteria told ESPN Deportes' Enrique Rojas on Thursday.

Renteria was speaking about the Giants' $1 million offer to be the backup infielder for San Francisco.

"To play for a million dollars, I'd rather stay with my private business and share more time with my family," he said. "Thank God I'm well off financially and my money is well invested."

(Raise your hand if you'd like to play for a million...)

Renteria just won another World Series ring with the Giants, although he missed part of the season due to injury and hit just .276/.322/.374 in 267 plate appearances with iffy defensive results.

However, Renteria was instrumental in the World Series run, nabbing the MVP award. He has considered retirement but is willing to return to San Francisco or other former teams in the Cardinals and Marlins. Florida is reported to have some interest, but it is not known whether the Marlins are the other team to offer a deal -- but the other offer wasn't to his satisfaction either.

"I have received at least another offer since I was a free agent, but it wasn't what I'm looking for to continue playing," Renteria said. "If I got a good offer, I'm playing, and if not, it's better to stay at home."

Renteria's likely staying home, because no team is going to pay a breaking down, aging player more than a million or two to backup. And to Renteria's credit, he's had a strong enough career that he doesn't have to accept any deal not to his liking.

Some of you just don't get it. Throw the number out the window. Would you be wiling to work for a fraction of what your co-worker of the same skill set and qualifications makes? I didn't think so. All he asks is to be paid on par with what the going rate for his resume calls for. Are you not entitled to a certain salary because some guy at a fast food resturaunt is surviving off of minimum wage? Does he have the right to judge you because you're unhappy with your salary, which may be 4x the amount of his?

Renteria 'disrespected' by Giants' $1M offer

Who has two thumbs and would need his smile surgically removed if someone offered him a million dollars to be a back up? This guy!!!! I mean come on I get that he did quite a bit for them in the world series but when you call a million dollar offer disrespectful then that just makes you look like an ass because the average person would die if they got a million dollars....and to call that disrespectful is nuts...I get that he doesn't like the offer but just don't say anything...just ask for more money and move on because you sound like an ass!

errr. There are a lot of cops who do make that much money a year, but they are moonlighting several jobs while on duty.

And yes the President does make a little more than a mill per year

Renteria 'disrespected' by Giants' $1M offer

Sabean had no real interest in bringing him back as a player, so the offer had to be made because he could be the type of player if signed by another team would give Giants more supplemental picks like they get for losing Uribe

Renteria 'disrespected' by Giants' $1M offer

I hate it when athletes cry about money. I especially hate it in the case of guys like Darrelle Revis where $10 million is not enough, but Edgar is the same way. Doctors, nurses, teachers, cops, fireman, EMTs, soldiers, and even the President of the United States don't make $1 million per year. He needs to shut up. And if we are talking about how much he is worth in baseball terms, he needs to get off his high horse because he is not as good as he seems to think he is.

Renteria 'disrespected' by Giants' $1M offer

Okay, professional baseball experts. While, I appreciate and respect your comments regarding Edgar Renteria's statement that the Giants $1M contact offer for the 2011 season was disrespectful, I beg to differ in some regards. Yes, Renteria was on the DL several
times last year and certainly in many circles of discussion, he may not warrant a higher salary than what is being offered by Sebean and the Giants (more on Sebean later). However, when it came to produce on the biggest stage in baseball, where was 'fatman', Pablo 'The Panda' Sandoval. He was on the pine getting splinters in his butt, that is why Juan Uribe was at 3B and Renteria at SS. Where did the invisible man, Pat Burrell go ? The guy could'nt buy a hit. Why was Barry (I make more money than any Giant) Zito left off the playoff roster ? I know the answer to that one and had he started, Texas very well may have won the WS. We all know that the Giants hang their
hat on that young pitching rotation and a cold blooded 'closer' in Brian Wilson. Enter, Buster Posey at the end of May and he certaintly became the catalyst in getting the Giants going in the right direction. Yes, there were other players that stepped up, like Uribe, who the
genius GM, Sebean, let him go the Dodgers, later explaining that he never was given a chance to put together an offer for Uribe. And,  he's only 31. Despite their great pitching, if the Giants don't have Renteria, Uribe, Posey and Felipe Lopez, they don't win the WS. For
the average guy like me and you, we'll take $1M in a heartbeat, but in the world of professional sports, my answer to the Renteria issue is simple "PAY THE MAN" !!!
