Reports: Beltre close to signing with Rangers

Adrian Beltre Dominican website PioDeportes.com reports Adrian Beltre has agreed to a six-year, $96 million contract with the Rangers. However, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News tweets the report is untrue.

The Rangers would likely have to find someone to take Michael Young before moving on Beltre, or at least have an idea that they could move Young.

The Angels are believed to be the front-runner (or, really, only-runner) for Beltre and the Rangers are seen by many as only posturing to drive up the price for their division rivals.

UPDATE: Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com also shoots down the initial report, but notes the Rangers are still talking to Beltre and his agent, Scott Boras.

UPDATE: As my pal Danny Knobler pointed out in his New Year's column , you never know with free agency... but it appears there's something to the Rangers-Beltre deal. ESPNDeportes.com's Enrique Rojas cites a source that says a deal is close between Texas and the free-agent third baseman.

According to the source, the two sides are still talking, but an agreement "appears imminent." It is believed to be a five-year deal with an option for a sixth year. The Rangers would likely move Michael Young to designated hitter.

Overall, it seems like it would be an upgrade over last year's Vladimir Guerrero/Young DH-3B combo, as Beltre outperformed Guerrero offensively last season and is an upgrade defensively at third base over Young. But it will come at a price of a longer-term deal with Beltre, who turns 32 in April.

UPDATE: MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan reports there's no deal yet, but both sides are interested. "Nothing is remotely imminent," Sullivan writes.

Reports: Beltre close to signing with Rangers

Beltre was a bust in Seattle. He only plays hard during contract years. He was a PED abuser in LA where he hit 48 HR during a contract year. Texas is bidding against themselves a typical Scott Boras ploy. There is a reason most teams are not bidding for Beltre.

Reports: Beltre close to signing with Rangers

Let's not forget that Beltre was already one of the most overpaid. Remember the year in LA. Then remember Seattle. Think about it. I'd go with Young all day.

Reports: Beltre close to signing with Rangers

If the reports are true 96 million is way overpaid. Not like im surprised by this anyways, they obviously got desparate and coughed up money towards a player. As if they needed more offense...Did anyone else lol at this picture in the article? reminds me of old Andruw Jones swinging off his back leg with an all or nothing swing.

Reports: Beltre close to signing with Rangers

If the rumour is true and Beltre has in fact signed a 6 year, $96 million contract with the Rangers, he will become the most overpaid ball player in professional baseball.

No that award goes to Soriano of the Cubs.

Way Too Much Time and Money

If the rumour is true and Beltre has in fact signed a 6 year, $96 million contract with the Rangers, he will become the most overpaid ball player in professional baseball.  Historically, he has a good year about every 6-7 years, and always in contract years, so the Rangers should have waited another 6-7 years before even thinking about signing him.  Where will Michael Young play now (DH)?  Andrus is locked into SS and if Beltre is a Ranger, he will likely demand to play 3B?  Perhaps a Rangers fan can help me fill in the blanks, because I don't understand signing this guy for that long at that price.

I wonder if $95M would have got the job done.  What a joke.

Beltre for 6 years for 96 mil? really??? Beltre won't even make it four years. WTF, I thought Tom Hicks had left owenship. They should have signed Vlad for another year. This is about a good as deal as the infamous Arod/Chan Ho park contracts. I guess the Rangers figure a championship run every 30 years is as good as they will ever get.

The only problem I would have with this is the money. But it is not my money. If Mike Young has to go for the trade to go thru then all bets are off. Beltre can play, he would upgrade the left side defense to the best in baseball. I would love Mike only having to concentrate on his hitting. I do not believe he would revert back to the hitter he was in Seattle. He would have plenty lineup protection and a very hitter friendly park. What I do worry about are the reports he likes to dog it a little. We have to many young players that might be influenced by a player like that. RANGERS...IF YOU SIGN THIS PLAYER TO THIS CONTRACT AND THINGS DON"T WORK OUT LIKE YOU WANT, DON'T TELL US YOU DON'T HAVE THE MONEY FOR ANDRUS, CRUZ, KINSLER, AND ESPECIALLY HAMBONE!!!
