The Mariners have avoided arbitration with a two-year deal for newly acquired shortstop Brendan Ryan, according to the Associated Press.

Ryan, acquired last month from the Cardinals, was arbitration-eligible for the first time. He'll get $1 million in 2011 and $1.75 million in 2012. The 29-year-old defensive wiz batted .223/.279/.294 last season.

Ryan hit close to .300 the year before. He's definitely better than a .223 hitter & he may be the best defensive SS in MLB. The Cardinals may regret letting him go.

The Mariners didn't have enough guys last year that hit around .223? Nice to see they are "padding the stats" with these incredible pickups.
