Cubs looking to fill rotation from within

James Russell Left-hander James Russell will compete for a spot in the Cubs' starting rotation, manager Mike Quade told the Chicago Tribune 's Paul Sullivan .

Russell was 1-1 with a 4.96 ERA in 57 appearances out of the bullpen for the Cubs as a rookie in 2010. He struck out 42 in 49 innings, while walking 11 and allowing 55 hits. He gave up 11 home runs, two for every nine innings pitched.

"I don't get too worked up early on, because, bang, all of a sudden you blink and things change," Quade said. "All of a sudden you've got two additions [in Matt Garza and Kerry Wood] who have specific roles and have earned them, and now it puts the kids and a lot of the other people in flux. The idea that you can never have enough pitching is huge. We'll see how the back end looks as it shakes out."

Garza, Carlos Zambrano and Ryan Dempster are already pencilled in for the team's rotation, with Russell, Carlos Silva, Randy Wells, Andrew Cashner, Casey Coleman, Tom Gorzelanny and Jeff Samardzija battling for the fourth and fifth spots of the rotation.

Gorzelanny put up solid numbers and pitched well last year. I don't understand why they're not giving him a chance at least as the #5 starter. They don't seem to appreciate him very much. I'm afraid they'll trade the kid.

AES, i like cashner, i really do, if he can earn the spot in spring training im all for it, i also agree that the rotation could use a lefty, problem is i think gorzalanny should be that guy, difference of opinion here im sure, but id just as soon go with 5 rightys and start either cashner/coleman/ or wells as the 4th and 5th, marshall wouldnt be bad, but your right that he means too much to the bullpen, but whatever way they go, im glad to see this many options

if wells can keep progressing i like him for the 4th spot in the rotation, as for the 5th spot, i like russell and cashners upside longterm, but i think both may need a little more time to progress, either starting at triple AAA, or working out of the bullpen, i dont care alot for gorzelanny, should probably be a long relief man out of the bullpen at best, samardzija has yet to live up to potential and i dont really expect next year to be much different, bullpen hand at best, which leads us to carlos silva and casey coleman, silva had the best season of his career last year, even if it only lasted the 1st half of the season, he was plagued by injuries late so it all depends on his health, if he pitches like 1st half silva during spring training, i think he has a good shot at getting the 5th spot due to experience, if he doesnt i expect it to go to casey coleman, i have a really good feeling about this coleman kid, if he can pitch well in spring training, similar to what he did toward the end of last season, i like his chances, so whether it is him or silva, i still see a bright future with coleman, cashner, and russell

I would be stunned if Cashner and Gorzelanny don't get the fourth and fifth spots in the rotation. Cashner is the most talented of all the pitchers in the hunt and Gorzelanny is a lefty. It'd be nice to have a lefty in the rotation that can keep the ball out of the bleachers, since Russell can't. Marshall means too much to the bullpen (the lefty thing again) and Carlos Silva is Carlos Silva.
