Agent sets deadline for Pujols deal

Posted on: January 15, 2011 3:11 pm

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak has vowed to remain tight-lipped on his efforts to sign Albert Pujols to an extension, but did share one detail with reporters on Saturday: It gets done by the start of spring training, or Pujols becomes a free agent after the season. The first baseman's agent, Dan Lozano, set the deadline at Pujols' request.

Pujols has made it clear he doesn't want to be distracted by contract issues during the season, but it was unclear precisely what the deadline was. Mozeliak has talked recently as if opening day was the target, but apparently the timeline is shorter than that. Pitchers and catchers report to Cardinals camp on February 14, with the full squad reporting February 19.

So yeah, John, it's only the most important contract in club history, and rioters will probably tear down the Gateway Arch at the mere thought of Pujols in pinstripes. No pressure.

I would trade Howard & Victorino to the Cardinals for Pujols and a minor league outfielder. Would they do it........probably not.

Easy with top-10 ever.  Ruth, Mays, Rose, Cobb, Mantle, Walter Johnson, Ted Williams, Bonds, Jackie Robinson, Aaron, and Ricky Henderson.  There are 11 players that are better than Pujols just off the top of my head, and if I gave it some thought I could probably come up with 11 more who are just about as good as Albert.  Now, don't get me wrong, Pujols is as good a hitter as there is in the game today as well as being a solid defensive 1B.  No doubt he will be a first ballot H-O-F guy when the time comes.  But top 5 of all time?  I don't think so.  That being said, there will be mass suicides if the Cards don't get him resigned and he walks for nothing.  Still, the O's could use a new 1B in 2012.

If you guys want Howard be my guest, you know what you pick any 3 minor leaguers from our system (with the exception of brody colvin) just to sweeten the deal.

Agent sets deadline for Pujols deal

I live in St. Louis and have all my life. I know this organization very well. Pujols is going nowhwere. This is a last minute power struggle for a few meaningless dolllars on the contract at this point. Mozeliak knows signing Pujols is a MUST, or there will be no fans in  the stadium come opening day. LaRussa would have never agreed to come back last year and sign a 2 year deal if he knew Albert wouldnt be here. St Louis Sports reporters already reported back in November/December that a deal was close. Do you really think Mozeliak would have went out and blown 8 million dollars on Berkman if he wasnt already somewhere in the ballpark with Pujols's contract? What Pujiols wants Pujols is going to get. The Cardinals have trimmed their salary since mozeliak has takien the GM position just to put themselves in a position to be able to afford this contract.  Pujols had said 2 years ago he wanted to see a committment from the team to putting  a championship caliber product on the field. Since then we have signed Holliday, Berkman, strenthened our middle infield and our pitching staff. Bottom line is Pujols is getting what he wants and He is going to be a Cardinal for life. Go Cards!!

"Top 10 to EVER play the game??? That statement is borderline ridiculous. Pujols is a great player without a doubt, but he'll finish his career nowhere near being one of the top 10 to ever play."

Shocking that this comment came from a Cubs fan. Please give out 10 others that would be better than him both offensively AND defensively (do not forget he is a gold glove winner.)

Yes, true fans understand this. Yardog, do yourself a favor and dont comment on things beyond your frame of reference. Pujols is the greatest player of this generation and is on pace to own every single substantial hitting record on the books. No player in the game inspires terror like Pujols...he has NO WEAKNESS!

Albert Pujols is already in the top 10 baseball players to ever play the game.  By the time he finishes, he will be in the top 5 ever.  The guy is as good as we are going to see in a longtime.  True fans of baseball know this.
