Agent sets deadline for Pujols deal

Posted on: January 15, 2011 3:11 pm
Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak has vowed to remain tight-lipped on his efforts to sign Albert Pujols to an extension, but did share one detail with reporters on Saturday: It gets done by the start of spring training, or Pujols becomes a free agent after the season. The first baseman's agent, Dan Lozano, set the deadline at Pujols' request.

Pujols has made it clear he doesn't want to be distracted by contract issues during the season, but it was unclear precisely what the deadline was. Mozeliak has talked recently as if opening day was the target, but apparently the timeline is shorter than that. Pitchers and catchers report to Cardinals camp on February 14, with the full squad reporting February 19.

So yeah, John, it's only the most important contract in club history, and rioters will probably tear down the Gateway Arch at the mere thought of Pujols in pinstripes. No pressure.

Agent sets deadline for Pujols deal

Albert Pujols is already in the top 10 baseball players to ever play the game.  By the time he finishes, he will be in the top 5 ever.  The guy is as good as we are going to see in a longtime.  True fans of baseball know this.

So you basically are not a baseball fan? You are so fragile you actually care what other people's beliefs are off the baseball field? I love the Houston Astros (I know they stink, but I'm a TRUE fan), and I like Fox News (ooooh bad man). But who give a cr@*! This is a forum for baseball you fragile idiot. I would love to have Pujols and Larussa in Houston, no problem. Those two alone would result in about 35-40 more wins easily...

There are guys that get over paid (i.e. pitchers with ERA's higher than 4.0 ) and there are guys that deserve to be PAID. Albert Pujols is a guy that you erase or move your existing first baseman to make room for Pujols. This is one of the few times where I think this guy can reasonably name his own price. SOmebody out there is willing to pay it. While I am not a Cardinals fan, they would be IDIOTS to not get this done ASAP. No reason to jerk his chain, distract him, or play games. Sign the guy or someone else will.

This is all going to end with Pujols being the highest paid non-pitcher in the league.  No doubt about it.  St. Louis would tear Mozeliak limb from limb if he let Pujols play out his contract and then go sign with a rival (Cubs).  Since he has basiclly accouted for most of their offence and played great defence his whole career, why would they not sign him.  There will never be a trade made because he is to valuable, and no team will give up what the Cards would need to replace him.  The Howard thing is close, but Philly will not give up their whole future for Pujols.  To make it worse St. Louis would find out just how good Pujols is when Howard strikes out 20 times with men on 1st and 2nd in the bottom of the 8th or 9th inning, going from a game winning RBI to a game ending whiff.  Hope the Cards poop in the nest and let him play out his contract, because the Cubs are poised and ready to give him the money.  If you think they won't look at who they have paid the big bucks to, and Pujols is twice as good as most of them.  By the way they only signed their 1st baseman to a 1 yr deal, hmmm I wonder if they are waiting for some one.  As a Cubs fan I hope the Cards botch this deal, even if we don't get Pujols the Cards will fall from grace quickly without him.  Not to mention that St. Louis fans will have a riot equal to the one Chicago fans will have if they get him.  GO CUBS!  we love you Albert, John Mozeliak is trying to screw you, come to the Cubs (subliminal message incase Mr. Albert Pujols reads this)

i've been a cardinal fan for as long as i can remember. i remember cot deal striking out whiz kid member granny hamner to win a game in 1950. i was six. i have never wanted anybody gone from the cardinals so much as pujols and larussa. they are both supporters of the crazy glen beck, who plays with his own poop. send pujols to san diego where most of the league's right wing nuts play.

I can totally see him being a Yankee. Mark Teixeira has been a disappointment the past 2 seasons. Pujols would command a 8 yr /$225 million contract from the Yankees and they could afford it with Pettitte, Rivera, and Posada retiring this or next season, Jeter taking a huge paycut, Burnett's contract expiring, and Teixeira being traded.
There's no way this will ever happen.  I don't see Pujols ever leaving St. Louis.  I can see the Cardinals eventually giving him what he wants.  Unless Pujols can become a starting pitcher, the Yankees don't need him and have no position for him to play anyway.

If you all remember when Albert was trying to get Manny to sign with Th Cardinals a couple of years ago he told him to take a discount in salary to come and play in a great Baseball Town and atmosphere og Saint Louis. Pujols is still the same Man . He will not ask for 30 mil a Year. He will take a discounted Salary for 7 Years and finish as the Greatest Cardinal ever....Agree?

honestAbe- Pujols and Ryan Howard both have full no-trade clauses. No way both waive them. Howard, maybe, since he's from St. Louis. No way Pujols does.
