Agent sets deadline for Pujols deal

Posted on: January 15, 2011 3:11 pm

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak has vowed to remain tight-lipped on his efforts to sign Albert Pujols to an extension, but did share one detail with reporters on Saturday: It gets done by the start of spring training, or Pujols becomes a free agent after the season. The first baseman's agent, Dan Lozano, set the deadline at Pujols' request.

Pujols has made it clear he doesn't want to be distracted by contract issues during the season, but it was unclear precisely what the deadline was. Mozeliak has talked recently as if opening day was the target, but apparently the timeline is shorter than that. Pitchers and catchers report to Cardinals camp on February 14, with the full squad reporting February 19.

So yeah, John, it's only the most important contract in club history, and rioters will probably tear down the Gateway Arch at the mere thought of Pujols in pinstripes. No pressure.

Arinze, Wow. I'll try not to express my opinion on all the other ridiculous trades in this post. Yes Howard is a great player, but not a gold glove first baseman, doesn't hit .330-.340 every year or score over 110 plus runs. He does hit 40 HR's and drive in 125 runs like Albert, BUT he strikes out 180-200 times a year. Brown had to leave winter ball because his confidence is shot, and could actually start the season in AAA where he needs to start out like the can't miss prospect he was 2 years ago.. Prospects are just that... prospects. Will a trade happen probably not. Is it as "ridiculous" as your post suggests, not really. If the Sox didn't get their first baseman from the Padres, Red Sox fans would be posting all kinds of ridiculous trades.

Did I really just read someone comparing Pujols contract talks with wrestling. Give me a break. Anyway, I am a cards fan who would have no problem with them trading Pujols for another top 1B and a frontline starter. While I think he's got more elite years left in him, any long-term deal will have him making elite money when he's on the downside of his career. I also have a tough time believing he's only going to be 31 this year.

yeah except for the part where that trade would never happen.  The Phils already have a great player in Howard, an up and coming star in Brown AND you want them to give up 3 prospects....for Pujols.  Albert is the MVP of the league, but please refrain from throwing out ridiculous trade offers

Phillies trade Ryan Howard, Dominic Brown plus 3 prospects(yes the still have 4 or 5 blue chippers) for Albert. Owner John Middleton approves a 7 year contract at $28.5-31 million per year. This is not as outlandish as one would think.

I would like to see him in pinstrips ( Cubbie blue pinstripes) that is. Dont get me wrong i hate the Cards, but Pujols is the best pure hitter in baseball. The Cards would be fools not to sign this guy to whatever he wants. without him they are the Pirates. If they dont sign him i see something like what happened with Brett Hart & the WWF when Vince screwed him & he signed with WcW. He (Pujols )will sign with the Cubs just to put it in the *** of the Cards GM. But i will have fun watching him sticking it deeper & deeper in the *** of the Cards when the two teams play each other for the next 7 years lmao. Go CUBS!!!!!

There's a reason the Cubs only signed first baseman Carlos Pena from the Rays to a one year contract. The contracts of Aramis Ramirez, Carlos Pena, and Kosuke Fukudome end after the 2011 season, totaling over $38 million, most of which will be offered to Pujols. If the Cards don't re-sign Pujols, and I don't think they can afford to, watch for the Cubs to offer Pujols a 10 year contract for about $300 million. You read it here first.

@ PHillies

Did u read my whole thread it was mostly sarcastic.  All the talk about look for this guy to have a great year in a contract year.  So Pujols who puts up .330 40homers and 130 rbi a season having a great contract year would be 360/50/150.

And what does Granderson have to do with anything im a Mets fan
