Agent sets deadline for Pujols deal

Posted on: January 15, 2011 3:11 pm

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak has vowed to remain tight-lipped on his efforts to sign Albert Pujols to an extension, but did share one detail with reporters on Saturday: It gets done by the start of spring training, or Pujols becomes a free agent after the season. The first baseman's agent, Dan Lozano, set the deadline at Pujols' request.

Pujols has made it clear he doesn't want to be distracted by contract issues during the season, but it was unclear precisely what the deadline was. Mozeliak has talked recently as if opening day was the target, but apparently the timeline is shorter than that. Pitchers and catchers report to Cardinals camp on February 14, with the full squad reporting February 19.

So yeah, John, it's only the most important contract in club history, and rioters will probably tear down the Gateway Arch at the mere thought of Pujols in pinstripes. No pressure.

You have to back up the money truck for the guy.  Man would I love to see him leave St. Louis, but I don't see it happening.  Best hitter in the game and it's not even close.

Where is he going to play?  1st...oh wait, they have Tex.  3rd...oh right, A-Rod for 20 more years.  DH...he's a gold glove fielder so not going to happen.

I love that you say this is a equal deal, and then through in Beltran and Reyes have been terrible!  Which is it?

.360 50HR and 150RBI  thats not unexpected

Do you realize Pujols has never hit .360, never been within 13 RBI's of 150 RBI's, and has only hit 50 HR's twice in his career (which was 6 years ago)?  You might want to temper your expectations a little, buddy.  But, hearing that type of a comment from a New Yorker doesn't come as much of a surprise, either.  After all, these were some of the same people telling me, before last season, that Granderson would hit .300 with 40 HR's and 120 RBI's in NY because Yankee Stadium was so much smaller than Comerica Park.

As for Pujols, the Cardinals would be really stupid to just not give him what he wants.  Pujols is, arguably, one of the best players in baseball history and his numbers warrant him to be paid as THE top player in the game.  He has a .331 career avg (has hit below .327 only TWICE in his career), AVERAGES 45 HR's a year, AVERAGES 136 RBI's a season, plays great defense, and steals a few bases.  Even if he has a slight drop-off, as most players do when they begin to age, he's still going to be one of the top players in the game, if not THE best player in the game.  Give the guy a 7 or 8 year extension (he's only 30) and pay him more than A-Roid.

If the Cardinals, by some miracle, don't get this done, I'd hope that Amaro could package Ryan Howard and a couple top prospects to bring Pujols to Philly.  He would surely fit this offense well because it would solve the problems as a result of having a lefty-heavy lineup.  But, that's not going to ever happen because St. Louis will almost definitely get a deal done by the beginning of Spring Training and everyone will see how ridiculous it was to think any team in baseball would be dumb enough to let this guy go.

I can totally see him being a Yankee. Mark Teixeira has been a disappointment the past 2 seasons. Pujols would command a 8 yr /$225 million contract from the Yankees and they could afford it with Pettitte, Rivera, and Posada retiring this or next season, Jeter taking a huge paycut, Burnett's contract expiring, and Teixeira being traded.

Just trade him to the Mets already. Pujols for Beltran, Reyes, and John Maine. Pretty equal deal right there for both teams considering how badly Reyes and Beltran have been. Th Cardinals can move Beltran to 1B since he can't run that much.

Everyone talks about contract years and how evryone plays better when they have an expiring contract.  What does Pujols' season look like if he doesnt sign an extension.

Agreed.  Not only has he been good for the team, but he has been great for the city and an all-around great role model and good citizen.  Anyone hating on Albert Pujols is either jealous of his talent or an idiot.  He's a class act.  Period.

Mozeliak really shouldn't play hard ball with the franchise there.  He really should just put a contract on the table and let Albert fill in the dollar and year amounts and call it good.
