Josh Hamilton After a week in the hospital following a bout of pneumonia, American League MVP Josh Hamilton will be released from a Dallas-area hospital on Sunday, MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan reports .

Hamilton was hospitalized on Monday what the team called "an early case of pneumonia."

Still, he is expected to resume training activities soon, and is also expected to appear at a Rangers team function on Friday and then at the Baseball Writers' Association of America dinner in New York on Saturday.

You people are incredible.  Josh has proved time and time again he is clean of drugs.  Yes he had a relapse two years ago, but it was alcohol, NOT DRUGS.  If you never followed, at the end of the ALCS, his teammates used Ginger Ale so he and CJ Wilson (who also does not drink) could partake in the championship celebration.  Is it true that Hamilton's past does play a factor?  Perhaps.  Nobody really knows what damage his body endured through that time, and maybe it is harder for him to recover from pneumonia.  But to say he is still doing drugs is unbelievable.  He is tested three times a week.  If you think he still has that side to him, you really need to be more familiar with the situation and get all the facts.

I think the Rangers are being very careful with Josh Hamilton...he is their MVP and they are going to do whatever they have to in making sure he is well and able to play this year. As someone mentioned earlier, when you have taken drugs or smoked crack, it has a profound effect on your lungs and you can be prone to pneumonia if you let the flu or a cold get out of hand.

To suggest Hamilton was back on drugs is pure insanity. This would have been a major story for the news media  and believe me, they would have broken it and it would be front page news. As it is, the only reason we are hearing about it is because Hamilton was the league MVP. Otherwise, it wouldn't have been a blip on the screen.

Come on dude, relapse? You don't go to the hospital for just one week on a relapse. Not to mention he is the most tested baseball player in the league. If he has a relapse then MLB will come down like a hammer. He has been given to many chances not too. There is going to be a truckload of money invested on that man and I can only imagine how careful they will be with him.

We actually have no idea how sick he may have been, because the Rangers are notorious for releasing what is best fro their PR. But him relapsing back into drugs is asinine.

You people are idiots. It can very easily happen. If he had a cold for a while that wouldn't go away or he didn't take care of right, it could have very easily progressed to pneumonia. Pneumonia is caused by bacteria and lots of people-- young and old-- get hospitalized for it. I'm a nurse and I've taken care of people of all ages and in all kinds of physical conditions with pneumonia.

Hope Josh gets better soon and gets back to playing good baseball

I wish him the best and a quick recovery.  I like how there so many wanna be doctors on this site. " No it can't be pneumonia, take vitamin D... My grandma had it etc..... who knows the truth? None of us have a medical degree and even if we did i would bet all the money in my bank account that no one posting here is his doctor. Just wish the guy the best and move on. He is a great story of overcoming your demons and like I said I hope he gets better.

Despite being a pro athlete in amazing shape now, don't forget those years of smoking crack he did. Crack (or freebasing powder coke) is extremely damaging to your lungs. One year of heavy use can easily do the same damage as 20+ years of smoking cigarettes. Still though, I do find it odd he spent an entire week in the hospital for an "early case" of pneumonia. My 67 year old mother had a full blown case of pneumonia that required them to drain one of her lungs and she only spent 6 in the hospital.  A full week for an early case ? Something fishy. Maybe he's got permanent lung damage or something.
