Mike Pelfrey With Johan Santana not available, Mike Pelfrey will be the Mets' opening day starter.

"He deserves it," Mets manager Terry Collins said on Wednesday (via The Star-Ledger). "He earned it. He should have been on the All-Star team last year."

Pelfrey, 27, was 15-9 with a 3.66 ERA last season.

On Tuesday, he signed a deal for nearly $4 million a year, avoiding arbitration.

The Mets start the season on April 1 in Florida, so he'll likely be opposite Josh Johnson in the first game of the season.

Collins also said the team is hoping to sign another left-handed reliever to go along with Taylor Tankersley. He also said the second base job is wide open, adding 23-year old Jordanny Valdespin as a candidate at second along with Luis Castillo, Daniel Murphy, Brad Emaus and Justin Turner.

That's the problem Schmidtuation, we don't have the money to spend.  This is why you are seeing the signings you are seeing this offseason.  Next season reduce our payroll by 80 million dollars, that's when you should see this team improve.  We only have Omar Manaya to thank for that.  Some of the contracts he gave was just outrageous.

It's just sad being a Mets fan especially when the Phillies have four number one's are there team. Don't forget we have more money then most teams and we should be spending it. Im getting tired of this one year away B.S

Where are the real fans? The ones who don't bash every little thing their team does. The rotation isn't that bad Pelfrey is good, Young(healthy) is good, Niese is good and Dickey is good. We''ll just wait and see who the 5th starter is and hope it all works out. But if all anyone can do is bitch about the Mets and call yourselves fans please do us fans who still stick by them through thick and thin a favor and piss off and jump to another team.

I bet he was happy when he heard Dan Uggla was traded. Now he actually has a chance to beat the Marlins.
