Yankees sign Jones

Andruw Jones
As has been expected for the past week, the Yankees have signed Andruw Jones to be their fourth outfielder. Danny Knobler of has confirmed that Jones will get $2 million with another $1.2 million in incentives.

In recent years Jones, 33, hasn't been anywhere near the numbers he put up in his prime, as he's batted .212/.312/.412 since 2007 with the Braves, Dodgers, Rangers and White Sox. But when healthy he's still a plus defensive player and he still has pretty good pop, hitting 19 homers last season in just 278 at-bats. His right-handed bat is a good fit with the Yankees, whose starters include two left-handers (Brett Gardner and Curtis Granderson) and a switch hitter (Nick Swisher). Jones batted .256 against left-handers last season.

Here`s the problem Mr Happy...Marcus Thames who hit very well and fit in as the 4th OF & right handed bat signed with the Dodgers for $1 million which is less than what the Ynaks paid an overwight and washed up Andruw Jones.  Don`t try telling me they couldn`t have re-signed Thames who did just fine in LF last year and was arguably one of the better hitters late last season. As a fan the Ynakees offseason has stunk. If they liked Andruw back from his days as an 18 year old hammering 2HR`s in the 1996 WS that`s sad b/c he`s now a big fat slob who`s collecting a paycheck to strike out.

Jones will be the Yankee 4th OF.
Crawford is the new Coco Crisp, only way more expensive.

Nice move by the yanks. The main thing you want from your bsckups is solid defense and Jones will definately bring that. And he's got a lot of power, given enough at-bats his HR total will be in the 20's.

The teams need was an OF who bats RH and can play defense from time to time. The Yankees answer is Andrew Jones. A very good pickup for the NEED of the team. Don't look at who he was because guys he played with are no longer those players either. After reading these comments I wonder if fans of any team can ever find happiness.

On this one Yanks are in a win-win situation.  How do they lose?  He is better defensively than anyone they have on roster.  Late inning replacement with pop in his bat and very little drop off as fill in for injury.  And for all you yankee haters because they spend too much in salaries only $2M.

I still think big problem is left side of infield.  A-Rod-Jeter is not good at all either offensively or defensively, with no backup.  Pena is not adequate.  I would still love to see Jeter at 3rd and find place for A-Rod as DH and replacement in outfield of infield.  They need to find full time SS with pop and defense.  A-Rod wont buy it but for team only solution.

As a long time Yankees fan I can't say I'm thrilled about this signing.  He is NOTHING close to what he was and the Yanks can probably expect about a .240 if they're lucky average with maybe 15-20 HR.  His defense may help them, it all depends on how much playing time he gets, I would imagine if he gets about 100-150 at bats and he's hanging around the .200 batting average with 3 HR he'll see a bunch of bench, only time will tell but one would think they would have someone in the minors that is close to the majors that they could bring up and get more out of.

HR every 14 at bats,,,not bad for a bench player. He won't hurt them.

For 2 million bucks, I guess I'd take Jones as a bench outfielder.  Sure, he isn't the same player he once was but at least he will be better defensively than Thames was.

Seems like the Yankees cant win.. When they go after a guy and sign him..OH the Yanks spend all the $$$.Now they go and get a guy whos a little older and isnt what he used to be for a BACK-UP role and they get killed for signing him,, REALLY WTF are they suppose to do,get a A league player and stick him in there.YEs Jones K's alot but his D will help them for sure, plus he can play all the OF positions. But its OK for the SOX to go and get STARS like Crawford,Gonzalez,Lackey,Beckett..ETC,,People in glass houses u know !!
