Yankees sign Jones

Andruw Jones
As has been expected for the past week, the Yankees have signed Andruw Jones to be their fourth outfielder. Danny Knobler of has confirmed that Jones will get $2 million with another $1.2 million in incentives.

In recent years Jones, 33, hasn't been anywhere near the numbers he put up in his prime, as he's batted .212/.312/.412 since 2007 with the Braves, Dodgers, Rangers and White Sox. But when healthy he's still a plus defensive player and he still has pretty good pop, hitting 19 homers last season in just 278 at-bats. His right-handed bat is a good fit with the Yankees, whose starters include two left-handers (Brett Gardner and Curtis Granderson) and a switch hitter (Nick Swisher). Jones batted .256 against left-handers last season.

Let me start by saying that i'm a Yankee fan. I have no real opinion of this move. It's a "so what" signing. Jeter signing was something they had to do. Did they overpay? Hells yeah. Should Jeter be batting 9th? Probably? But I digress, The Soriano move  makes the Yankees better, but what is most needed is a starting pitcher. Just way too many question marks after CC. Yanks tried to get Lee, but he clearly wasn't interested. Greinke would not have worked in NY. Head case. The Yankees offense should keep them in the race and then when a decent starter becomes available they will no doubt trade many prospects for him. Could be a guy like Bronson Arroyo, Zambrano, maybe a Chris Carpenter. Who knows? But the Yankees will find a pitcher. They always do. I'm not sure how any of this makes the Yankees "a joke" though. The Pirates are a joke, the Mets are a joke, The Royals are joke....Dig?

Yankees sign Jones do realize he's being signed to replace Marcus Thames, right? Only difference between the two is that Jones can actually play the field......

Talk about DESPERATION. The yanks should have tried signing free agents that matter much earlier, now they get to scoop up guys like Andruw Jones and grossly over pay for an 8th inning relief pitcher. The yanks will make the playoffs this season over tampa and any AL central wild card contender, they still have powerful bats and very good defense, but not improving their starting pitching is going to be their downfall this season. Not getting Lee or Greinke was a major blow to their team, which will cost them at least 15 wins and many many innings of extra bullpen work; Lee and Greinke always pitch deep into games and along w/ cc would have kept their pen fresh. yanks should have offered Lee or Geinke deals they could not have refused, let Jeter walk if he refused the best offer he was going to find (10-12 mil/yr), and signed lee or greinke w/ the money they ended up spending on jeter and soriano. I know yanks fans love jeter and I know he's had a HOF career, but he's not worth half of what he's getting at this point in his career.
