Manny Ramirez The Rays have shored up their designated hitter spot in a big way on Friday -- not only signing Johnny Damon as expected, but also Manny Ramirez, Sports Illustrated 's Jon Heyman tweets .

CBSSports.com senior writer Danny Knobler reported earlier the Rays were close to signing Damon, 37. Damon hit .271/.355/.401 for the Tigers in 2010, but managed just eight home runs.

Ramirez hit .298/.408/.460 with the Dodgers and White Sox last season with nine homers, appearing in just 90 games.

With Ramirez in the fold, Damon will likely have to man the outfield some for the Rays and can also serve as a babysitter for his former Red Sox teammate.

UPDATE: Damon will get $5.25 million from the Rays, plus $750,000 in attendance bonuses. Ramirez will earn $2 million, Heyman tweets .

CheeseSteakLove: 2 mil for a guy capable of hitting 35 hr and 100 rbi in any season? That's an f'n steal!

If he shows up to play, I completely agree. Of course, as soon as he decides he's not being respected because the Rays expect him to play on a day he doesn't feel like playing or he shoves a senior to the ground, that might change in a hurry.

I am so disappointed.  Thought the Cubs would pick him up for a cool 15 to 20 milliion and put him on a team with Zambrano, Soriano, Marmol, Pena, Soto, A. Ramirez, Castro and the other overpaid bunch of guys.  LOL.  How can you miss this one, Hendry?

Rays adding Manny and Damon

What dosen't make sense to me is that Damon is actually making over 5 mil while Manny's only getting 2? I understand he's not gonna get what he got from the Dodgers at this point in his career but only 2 mil for a guy capable of hitting 35 hr and 100 rbi in any season? That's an f'n steal!

Rays adding Manny and Damon

I read that sentence as pointing out the fact that he only managed to play in 90 games last year, not that hitting nine homers in 90 games was a good ratio.

Except, due to your lack of reading comprehension, you don't understand that he meant he only played in 90 games.  He's not saying that 9 homeruns, or 1 every ten games is a feat.  He's saying Ramirez barely played half a season.  Because he sucks.
