Guerrero bound for Baltimore?

Vladimir Guerrero Could Vladimir Guerrero be close to joining the Orioles?

That's what former Reds and Nationals general manager Jim Bowden tweets . Bowden, now working for Sirius XM, says Guerrero is "getting close to accepting humbling deal w O's."

The Baltimore Sun 's Dan Connolly is all for it , writing the Orioles are now in a position to go get Guerrero for $5-$6 million, as the music has come close to stopping on the designate hitter version of musical chairs.

The Rays reportedly landed two DHs on Friday, Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon, while the Jays added offense in Juan Rivera and Mike Napoli.

The likely suitors appear to be down to the Angels, Rangers and Orioles. The Rangers didn't pick up his option, while the Angles didn't re-sign him after 2009.

Connolly notes the Orioles could move Luke Scott to left field, which would make Felix Pie the fourth outfielder and send Nolan Reimold to Triple-A, something the team could consider anyway.

UPDATE: That's why there was a question mark on the headline (I'm never quite sure what to do with reports from Leatherpants) -- the Orioles' Andy MacPhail denied the Bowden report in an e-mail to's Steve Melewski . "Report is not accurate," MacPhail said in the e-mail. Of course, it could just be a differing of opinion on what constitutes "close" or it could be that the Orioles haven't talked to Guerrero.

Guerrero bound for Baltimore?

What do the Orioles have to lose on this signing.  They have no where to go but up so why not take a $5 million shot on Vlad for one year and see if he can hit .300/25/100.  The Orioles lineup is looking improved - the bullpen is solid - it will all come down to the starting pitching.  I think McPhail is shoring up all the pieces and hoping the rotation finds some magic.  Last year the Orioles needed magic all over the place - now its just down to the starting pitching.  I hope it works out - I miss the good times.

"...dude looks like he's falling apart fast."
Slammin, are we talking about the same Vladimir Guerrero here?  Are you referring to the same guy who went for 29 HRs, 115 RBIs, and hit .300 last season?  If that's falling apart, I'll take three more in addition to Guerrero.  For a single season at roughly $5 million, that production in the middle of the Orioles lineup could be a bargain.

The O's don't need a powerhouse lineup-- Buck Showalter proved that down the stretch this past August and September.  They need to play like a team and learn how to win consistently.  I have faith that men like Guerrero and Derrek Lee can teach these young birds how to do it.

You are right ... plus all reports are that he does not want to be here with the O's, but remain on the West Coast.

I really prefer that the 3B job go to Bell or Snyder, but they brought him here so they must intend to play him.  GOT to be better than Garrett Adkins last year.

Showalter seems to have some kind of magic touch, so maybe he knows something O's & baseball fans don't.

The Orioles are a team I'd like to see become relevant again in the AL East. Leaving Texas after Cliff Lee to the Phillies, the Rangers are becoming irrelevant as a one season AL WS contestant ?

Classic Lowly O`s move....where old DH`s go to collect $ in one more contract. Yes Vlad was great during the regular season last year for the Ranger$, but dude looks like he`s falling apart fast. It`s moves like this that clog up the roster from ever having any young talent play. For those who smoke the pipe go ahead and call D. Lee/Reynolds & Vlad a powerhouse lineup. I`ll bet both D. Lee & Vlad break down before July. Please sell to Cal and let him save the franchise.

It's only a 1 year deal so I like it. When Scott was out of the lineup with his injury last season, the team didn't have anyone to step in with a power bat. Yes the dude is old, but he did hit 29 bombs and over 100 RBI's last yr. I honestly think Buck can put together an excellent lineup and game plan with this squad and be competitive.

Guerrero bound for Baltimore?

Orioles didn't miss anything 7 years ago. Vlad didn't come to Baltimore because there are not many latin players or fans to make him comfortable. If this report is true which I doubt then the Orioles would have to trade Felix Pie or Luke Scott. There is more interest in Pie. Why should the Orioles sign Vlad for 1 year and not have the better services of Pie or Scott who can both play the field? Both are left fielders but can play other positions. Pie is more of a center fielder and Scott is able to play first base. The Rangers had Vlad play right field in the World Series and couldn't even run after the balls hit in right center field. He is a one dimensional player but I am not sure what kind of player he is in the clubhouse. The Orioles should be looking for a starting pitcher and a corner infielder instead of going after someone who isn't really going to help much. But if they do sign him then I would guess they would trade him to a contender when the trade deadline comes up.
