Nats want Sizemore, Carmona?

The Indians are still looking to move salary, and could unload two of their top three payroll obligations for 2011 if, as reported by MASN's Phil Wood, the Nationals are potentially interested in trading for pitcher Fausto Carmona and outfielder Grady Sizemore.

Carmona is due $6.1 million in 2011, with three years of club options beyond that. He wouldn't exactly be the top-of-the-rotation ace Mike Rizzo went into the winter targeting, but based on his 2010 numbers (13-14, 3.77 ERA, 210.1 innings, 102 ERA+), he can at least be a solid rotation piece.

Sizemore was originally a prospect for the Expos (now Nationals) before went to Cleveland along with Cliff Lee in that bizarre Bartolo Colon trade in 2002. Sizemore would be a somewhat high-risk acquisition, as he played just 33 games last season before being knocked out by knee surgery and might or might not even be ready for opening day. But it's a high-upside scenario if Sizemore is healthy -- it's not often you get a shot at a 28-year-old three-time All-Star center fielder. He's due to make $7.5 million this season with an $8.5 million club option for 2011.

Keep in mind that this is just talk, and the Nationals might end up interested in one of the two instead of both (assuming even that Cleveland would part with both), but if Washington got the pair it would be $13.6 million for a couple of potentially big pieces with options in place for another year or, alternately, the chance to cut ties. The Indians would get even closer to the bottom of the barrel in payroll, and Indians fans would again get the shaft.

Nats want Sizemore, Carmona?

I've said it before and I will say it again... Cleveland is the joke of the sports world. Their fans are terrible, their teams are terrible, and their owners are terrible.

If there is any truth to this, then I wish Larry Dolan would sell the Indians since he does not seem to want to spend money in order to field a competitive team.  At least previous owner Dick Jacobs was willing to spend the money to try to bring a championship to Cleveland.  Oh well, it looks like the championship drought will continue for loyal Browns and Indians fans like me - and I couldn't care less about the Cavs.

What if they were getting Strausburg back in the deal? Obviously they would not, but point is to find out what they would ge in return before questioning why they would do it!

I'd like to see the Nats get aggressive & become a legitimate, possibly even contending team

You mean like when they went to the ALCS a few seasons ago, and the home attendance was still in the bottom third in the league?

If there is any truth to this rumor the Cleveland should be able to do better than whatever Washington is offering. If the other teams think Sizemore is available there could be a bidding war. What are the chances Cleveland leaked this news just for that reason?

So now you tell me whats worse? The Yankees trying to win and spending a lot of $$ to do so, or, Teams like this that could obviously care less about their fans or winning just so they don't have to spend money. The next time you "payroll argument crybabies" think about complaining think about that.

What could Washington possibly offer to Cleveland to acquire either or both players? Though he's been injured for the past two seasons, in '08 Sizemore was a 30-30 centerfielder with great defense. And it's not like he's over-the-hill. He's still got a good 5 years left in his prime and $8M is a freaking bargain in today's market for a guy with that kind of talent. For one, I can't believe Cleveland would be dumb enough to get rid of the only remaining decent players it has and I also can't imagine what the Nationals could possibly have to trade for a guy who was a top 10 player in the game before he got injured.

If the Tribe front office insists on putting a minor league product on the field, they ought to cut ticket prices down to triple AAA  level as well.

why would cleveland do this?  that would worsen an already tenuous relationship with its fan base who has continued to show that if a good product is put on the field, the fans will support it.
