Cashman: Jeter likely to become OF

Derek Jeter
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman attended a breakfast Tuesday morning sponsored by a New York radio station, and espnW contributor Amanda Rykoff relayed some of his comments via Twitter.

* Cashman would be "surprised" if Derek Jeter plays shortstop for the four-year duration of his contract, predicting Jeter will move to the outfield. But ... but ... Jeter is the best shortstop in the league! Gold Glove voters said so!

* Asked who was the better team right now, the Yankees or Red Sox, he answered, "Red Sox. But we have a better bullpen." OK, points for candor there, as that probably won't play well in the Bronx.

* No chance of Joba Chamberlain returning to the rotation, because he "hasn't been the same" since the 2008 shoulder injury he suffered in Texas.

* A.J. Burnett "knows he has a problem and he's doing all he can to fix it."

* "We're one starter away from being a World Series contender."

UPDATE: After the Jeter thing predictably caught fire online, Cashman backtracked a bit in a conversation  with the Star-Ledger, saying it was just a hypothetical and not anything that has been discussed as being imminent.

"We'll deal with that if he loses something and forces us to deal with that. That's not where we're at," he said, adding that the casual exchange at a fan breakfast was a "baseball conversation, not a declaration, not an announcement, nothing of that nature."

Cashman: Jeter likely to become OF

I am at a loss for rational thought on this one!  Jeters numbers on offense are on the serious decline.  You can't have a light hitting batter in left or right field, which leaves center.  This is one of the few spots were defense is the number 1 priority.  The other 2 are catcher and shortstop, which is the position they would take him away from.  You can't learn to play centerfield overnight.  It takes time to learn, plus great speed, which is going to be an issue very soon.  They had no choice to resign him, gotta get 3000 hits as a yankee, but outfield is not the answer.  He has to play shortstop, than DH or pinch hit after that option is over.

GangGree...Victorino trade? uhhh NOPE!  Werth trade? ummm NOPE!!!  Know your facts before you spurt your "knowledge."  Also who ever said anything about the yankees buying talent they didn't say anything about trade.  If the yankees traded for all of the stars they have had over the years people wouldn't talk as much.  I'm saying this bc in trades, most of times, you used YOUR FARM to get talent.  So players like Halladay, Oswalt and Lidge....the Phillies used their farm systems to get those players.

Must be nice to be able to keep all your homegrown talent and buy others homegrown talent.

Might as well order 5 or 10 Gold Gloves in advance for his outfield play!

With this inevitable change looming is he entitled to the All Star Game A-Rod-esque Cal Ripken switcheroo?

When Jeter moves to the OF will he still do his "jump & turn" manuever to hit the cut-off man?

When George died, the Yankees died.  The Yankees are finally in their decline.  Even ridiculous money can't lure everyone they want.  Cliff Lee seen the writing on the wall.  So did others.  Some will sell their soul for the dollar, but, you usually get certain people in return.  Brian Cashman will of course be the first victim in the front office.  Yankees will be lucky to make playoffs this year.  If they do, they better win it because they may not be there again for a moment.

dbrapp,   Thank you for not making me stand up for Jeter to all who think he is overrated. Like you said his number back it all up and with those numbers he has he will be a first ballot hall of famer easy!  Anyone with 3000 hits, lifetime 300 hitter, as well as his base stealing and gold gloves and as you said being MR Clutch in the biggest games of his life says it all. While he doesn't deserve this new contract at short-stop him playing out field would be good for the Yanks. With his numbers and absolutely no chance of being accused of using steroids coupled with the way he carries himself off the field he is not only a HAll OF Famer but a good person to boot!
