ColonThe Yankees have signed Bartolo Colon to a minor-league deal, reports FOX Sports' Jon Paul Morosi.

Colon hasn't pitched since 2009 with the White Sox, posting a 4.19 ERA in 12 starts. He spent 2008 with the Red Sox and four seasons prior to that with the Angels.

Despite Colon's reputation as a durable pitcher -- he hurled 222 2/3 innings as late as 2005, when he was 32 -- he has broken down over the last few years with shoulder injuries and an assortment of other maladies.

Long known for being overweight, Colon has reportedly lost a significant amount of weight and posted a 1.47 ERA in seven starts while pitching for the Dominican Winter League. That's enough to get him another look in the majors, but the cards are stacked against him -- especially if things don't go his way as the Red Sox were abandoned by the portly right-hander near the end of 2008.

However, the Yankees can't get too cute in their pursuit of starting pitchers. The Yankees have no depth beyond the No. 3 starter and need to have reinforcements in place in case of injuries or attrition. Colon, along with Mark Prior, should compete for a rotation job in spring training although Ivan Nova and Sergio Mitre remain the favorites.

That's hilarious. Not sure why the Yankees are picking up all the garbage that was on the White Sox last year. First they pick up Andruw "Mr. Automatic K or GIDP with RISP" Jones and now 79 Year old Bartolo Colon. The buffets in the Bronx better lock their doors.

As much as I love to see the potential disaster this Yankee pitching staff could be in 2011, I have to admit I'm amazed it's gotten to this point.  For all the money they've thrown around the last decade to land whatever piece of the puzzle they needed to keep moving forward, it's actually quite a shock to see them floundering for pitchers to fill out a rotation past the #2 spot.

Bartolo Colon and Mark Prior?  Could these two be the biggest injury gambles on the open market?  These two have more scar tissue than Sly Stallone in another Rambo sequel.  The last time either one was truly successful, George W. was still holding down 1600 Pennsylvania.  That's a steep hill to climb for success in 2011

Ivan Nova and Sergio Mitre?  Could Yankee fans be looking at the #3 pitcher in their rotation at Ivan Nova with all of his 24 innings of Major League experience?  Don't get me wrong-- the guy could be the real deal.  But when was the last time any playoff-hopeful franchise started a season with a #3 man in the rotation with less experience and more riding on his success?  Or is it Sergio Mitre's job to lose as the #3 starter?  That's even more scary!  In Mitre's three starts last season, hitters tuned him up to a .291 batting average and an OPS of .835-- those numbers would make Robby Cano proud... as a hitter-- not a starting pitcher.

Desperate times call for desperate measures lmao. How do you have a quarter billion dollar payroll but only have 3 starting pitchers? And 3 is a stretch because that includes AJ Burnett. Lol What a joke.

Meh.  This guy is done.  I don't see him throwing one pitch for the Yankees....except in the minors maybe.
