Piniella joining Giants

Posted on: February 2, 2011 2:10 pm

Lou Piniella retired from managing last year, but has not left the game. The San Francisco Chronicle 's John Shea reports Piniella will join the Giants' front office as a consultant.

He will be based in Florida, but will work with general manager Brian Sabean in an apparent open-ended, wide-ranging role.

Piniella and Sabean worked with the Yankees in the 1980s and interviewed Piniella after the 2006 season for the Giants job, but took the Cubs job instead.

Piniella joining Giants

Apparently, Lou's mother is feeling much better now and he is able to go back to work. Of course, we all totally believed him when he told us that he was leaving the Cubs - who were floundering under his lead - during the season, because, alas, his mother needed him. I haven't heard anything about his mother. Haven't heard that she passed away. So, I guess sh must be feeling better. Good to hear it Mrs. Piniella. You've raised a fine honest son.
