Buehrle is not a Michael Vick fan

Mark Buehrle Count White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle as one person who will not be sending a congratulatory note to Michael Vick for his NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award.

Buehrle and wife Jamie (photo courtesy of The Telegraph of Alton, Ill.) are huge dog advocates. They started a "Sox for Strays" program to support animal rescue groups. They're on billboards promoting pet adoption. In December they volunteered to pay $2,400 in vet bills for a Sheltie found near Buehrle's hometown with an arrow stuck through its abdomen.

So Buehrle isn't ready to forgive Vick's dog fighting history, and made that clear in comments to MLB.com.

"Even if you are not a dog lover, how can you sit there and make two dogs fight and one is going to die?" he said. "How could you do that if you are somewhat sane?

"He had a great year and a great comeback, but there were times where we watched the game and I know it's bad to say, but there were times where we hope he gets hurt. Everything you've done to these dogs, something bad needs to happen to these guys."

Curiously, those quotes, as well as some comments about Vick by Jamie Buehrle, were removed from the story by MLB.com while I was writing this item. But we have the original, the Chicago Tribune reported the excised quote before it was taken down, and the story's author sent the quotes out via Twitter.

>>Why would he want something done to Vick?  Vick is a human being.  Dogs are not.  If Vick has a pet, then the parallel thing should be to have things done to Vicks' pets.

Your logic is extremely flawed. You don't make innocent creatures suffer for what their owner does.

Michael Vick stood by while animals saved each other. You don't take that out on innocent parties like his wife, his children, or people who surround him. You take it out on him.

If you're going to do so, which hopefullypeople won't. Vick didn't have this dog fighting ring in vacuo - lots of people paid to watch those dogs fight...too bad they can't be banned from having pets, etc.

Buehrle is not a Michael Vick fan

That's OK. I'm not a Mark Buehrle fan either. Except for throwing a no hitter like Dallas Braden and Jonathan Sanchez most people would have trouble telling the three guys apart. All three throw left-handed, have facial hair and a mediocre career pitching record.
Why is cbssports mixing sports? It's hard to quantify comments made by a baseball player and his baseball wife regarding a football player. For example, a football player could say that baseball players need to use drugs in order to compete while not many football players have been caught using steroids. That statement is true, but what the football player did not mention is that the NFL has a strict drug policy while MLB has one that basically amounts to "You can take whatever you want, but don't publicize it. We won't tell if you won't tell. But if you get caught, we will pretend to shocked and pretend to really want to punish you".

Buehrle is not a Michael Vick fan

i def wonder if vick really cares ...
i hear him say all the politically correct things that almost all major ath are spewing these days ..(i.e.'overcome adversity')
but..
id like to see some REAL action on his part ...
talking to kids in schools is ok i guess..but..whats he saying ? 'walk ur dog, pick up the poop!' ? no..
hes prolly saying .. 'watch who u hang out with' and  'overcome adversity'...
he needs to be educating the adults that are training their dogs to fight. or better yet .. actively pursuing them to change their outlooks .

he could really be a good thing for pit bulls across america, if he actually did some real, heartfelt press /actions

all ihear/see is PC work at its finest ..
good for this guy for not having a 'prepared statement' and actually speaking from his heart.

Vick has already received his punishment and served most of it.  Why do people continue to want more punishment on him?  Get over it.  Its done.

Buehrle is not a Michael Vick fan

I'm not surprised. Anyone that follows sports in Chicago knows that Buehrle is passionate about dogs, and I'm right there with him. He's also not afraid to say what he thinks, and he clearly thinks Vick is a sick freak. I'm also eye to eye with Buehrle on that one. And as far as the moronic "soft-tosser" jab, the guy has won a World Series, thrown a no-hitter and tossed a perfect game. What have you done?

Don't feel bad about wishing injury when Vick not only wished, but ordered, death. Good for you, Mr. Buehrle for standing up for what you truly believe in! mad respect!!!!
