If I thought these kinds of powers were possible, I might think I jinxed Josh Beckett.

Less than a few hours after I predicted a huge 2011 for the Red Sox ace -- well, at least one of them -- he was struck by a baseball in the head.

According to reports, it was friendly fire -- as a coach armed with a fungo hit the ball back toward a bucket used to retrieve balls behind second base. Beckett was standing in shallow left field.

Fortunately for Beckett and the Red Sox -- and the coach who hit the ball -- he is reportedly just fine. This is the second time this spring Beckett has been hit above the shoulders by a ball. (Extra Bases blog )

I'm guessing Red Sox nation is praying that number remains at two. He might not be so lucky as to escape injury a third time.

UPDATE: Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe has reported (via Twitter ) that Beckett is experiencing "mild concussion symptoms" and will be re-examined Tuesday. Fortunately the word "mild' is in there, but the fact that he's having any symptoms at all is at least a little worrisome. The good news is it's still only February 28.

The Red Sox and Yankees are teams in MLB...it's not life and death.

You should spend some time in some of the unstable regions in Africa...every day is life and death there, and it's real, and they don't care about baseball. They try to survive and that's about it...nuff said.

And their fans got to realize that 2 teams do not a league make... Great post!

Perhaps a chorus of "Why Can't we be Friends" should be playing in the back ground. It's one thing to love your team, or even hate another, but to wish someone gets hurt or has a serious injury is very sad and disturbing. Josh Beckett is a very good pitcher who hasn't done anyone any harm, except maybe striking out your favorite player. The Red Sox and Yankees are teams in MLB...it's not life and death.

Beckett blows.  I'm with the Sox all the way except when it comes to that shmuck.  The only person with the Sox organization that I've ever wanted to see suffer a traumatic head injury was Les Otten.  Sox should send Beckett packin like they did Otten.

Do you remember the Red Sox from 1918 to 2004 were a whole bunch of losers. You pick a decade to criticise the Yanks but fail to mention the 86 years prior to 2004. Also, The Yankees had the best winning pct of any team in the 80's. Look it up. What is the capacity of Fenway? 30, 000? Yankee Stadium is what? 55, 000? You are such an expert in describing all the years in the 2k era but in 2009 it was luck. I see. Yanks missed the playoffs how many of those years? 1. Red Sox? How many?

One more thing Jenkins....since you are so arrogant with your Yankee class. Do yourself a favor and read the book "The Devil Wears Pinstripes". It will actually knock you off of your little Yankee pedestal. An iconic organization? YES! But a classy iconic organization? NO!

Do you not remember from 1979 to 1996 your team was a bunch of losers, didn't make the playoffs very often and no championships. Steinbrenner was a joke hiring and firing B. Martin multiple times.
You propbably don't know what I am talking about cause you weren't born yet. You jumped on the bandwagon from 1996-2000. Thought you could beat AZ in 2001, lose to Anaheim in 2002, FLORIDA in 2003, choke of 2004 to Boston, LAA in 2005, Det in 2006, Clev in 2007, missed playoffs in 2008, got lucky in 2009, lose to Texas in 2010, and miss playoffs in 2011 with an old team.

NYY could finish 4th this year, but will definately finish behind Boston. Your starters are horrible 3 through 5.

Love it when the Yankmees over-spend!

Plus Yankee fans don't even fill the  new boring cement stadium anymore, Fenway is standing room everyday!

I felt like I was at Petco when I went to New Yankee stadium. Same stadium but better weather in So-Cal!
