The news might be unsurprising, but it's still big for Jon Lester. The 27-year-old left-hander will make his first opening-day start for the Red Sox, manager Terry Francona officially announced Wednesday. (MLB.com )

Lester has already proven himself one of the best pitchers in the majors, and this is one of the final steps in establishing him as such in the public eye. He made his first All-Star Game last season and finished fourth in Cy Young voting. He was 19-9 with a 3.25 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. He struck out 225 batters in 208 innings.

The thing is, though, he was already pitching on that level for the two previous years. Lester started 65 games in the previous two seasons and compiled a 3.31 ERA and 1.25 WHIP along with a 31-14 record. He struck out 225 hitters in 2009.

Might the next natural step be a Cy Young award? It's entirely possible. He'll start his quest on the first day of the regular season.

Lester to get ball for Red Sox on opening day

I think people are overlooking the fact that the Orioles, yes the Orioles will be an OK team this year.  I think that the Red Sox, even with the additions will probably take this division but might end up with the same amount of wins as they had in 10 when they didn't make the postseason.  Gotta tip your hat to the entire division and realize we aren't just going to walk right thru this.  We really didn't gain a whole ton with Gonzo considering how well Beltre played over at 3rd last season so the difference will be Crawford and how well he moves around the bases.  That said, it'll be very important for Ellsbury to recover and get on base.  This team cannot win the division if they have to rely on 300 or more at bats from Mike Cameron

Suntandanman, I agree with that.  The yanks are still good but they are not first place material right now.  Their pitching is not good enough anymore.  Sabathia and Hughes are gunna lose a few games and the other three pitchers are wild cards.  As for Pgarcia.  I mean  your just an idiot. I dont know if I could have said that any better.  its obvious the redsox dont suck so I mean yea  your an idiot man. GO SOX!!!!

Wake over Lackey?  I think Wake should be used as an innings eater to keep Jenks, Wheeler, Bard and Papelbon fresh.  With that lineup, starting staff and relievers, barring injuries should be a record setting year.  Will be amazing to watch for sure.

What a formality, one of the best lefties in the game, getting better ever year.  Glad to see he's rebounded from his bout with cancer

Is this suntandaman serious? Rays are a last place team? Its official. You pretty much know nothing about baseball. The Rays still have some of the best talent in the majors, and there rotation is top 3 in all of baseball. Soriano overachieved badly last year, dont expect the same season he had last year. Crawford is the Rays only huge loss. Brignac is already better than Bartlett, and Hellickson will be better than Garza. I cant believe you said that.

Obviously, you do not follow baseball because the Rays have lost Pena, Crawford, Garza, Soriano and maybe even bartlett, thus they have no shot at beating the Yankees. The red Sox legitimately have potentially a better team but the Rays are going to be battling it out with the Orioles for the basement. the Yanks still have a potent offence, Sabathia, Hughes and they will get a bounce back year from Burnett. The Yanks will either win the AL East or win the wild card...you can bet on that.
