Orioles' Showalter rips Yankees, Red Sox

One would think playing in the AL East with the Yankees and Red Sox -- not to mention the Rays -- would be a difficult enough task without angering the opposition. Yet that's exactly what Orioles' manager Buck Showalter decided to do in an interview for April's issue of Men's Journal . (via NorthJersey.com )
"The first time we went to Yankee Stadium, I screamed at Derek Jeter from the dugout," Showalter told the magazine. "Our guys are thinking, 'Wow, he's screaming at Derek Jeter.' Well, he's always jumping back from balls just off the plate. I know how many calls that team gets – and yes, he [ticks] me off."

Of the Red Sox, Showalter was even more candid.

"I'd like to see how smart Theo Epstein is with the Tampa Bay payroll," he said. "You got Carl Crawford 'cause you paid more than anyone else, and that's what makes you smarter? That's why I like whipping their butt. It's great, knowing those guys with the $205 million payroll are saying, 'How the hell are they beating us?' "
I'm confused here. Buck goes after the Red Sox for having a big payroll but said $205 million. That's the Yankees. The Red Sox are in the $170 million range. It's also funny he said he likes "whipping their butt." Again, not sure which team he's talking about, but it doesn't matter. Showalter's Orioles went 3-3 against both the Red Sox and the Yankees last season. That's hardly whipping anyone's backside. Maybe he meant to speak in the future tense and was talking about this season? If so, I won't be holding my breath.

Look, the Orioles are probably a good amount better than they were last season at this time, but that doesn't mean they're contenders in the AL East. I'll also give credit to Showalter for trying to establish to his players and the fans that he's not scared of the two financial powers in the division. It just seems a bit much (and going after Jeter? Really?). Plus, I've had enough with the whining about money. After all, the Orioles had an operating profit of over $25 million last season -- and the Red Sox lost money.

Yes he went after Jeter. So what. Whi the hell is Jeter that he is above that? He is stealing from the Yankees last year, as he will for the rest of his career. What Buck accuses him of is nothing less than the discussions about him all the time, not to mention when he has cheated to get on base on close pitches. At one time he was the most clutch hitter in the game and an excellent fielder as well. He has GG that he didn't deserve and if ARod had stayed at short he wouldn't even have them. He picked up the write in vote that becamse available when Cal vacated the position. Now he was not deserving of his accolades at the end of his career at 3b either, but he never leaned into pitches to get a free base or tried to sell a whiff as being hit.

Matt Snyder is a retard and probably a yankee fan as well. Doesn't everyone like beating the Yankees and Red Sox because of their huge payroll? he never said he owns them or beats them evey time or anything. he said that's why he likes beating them, and yeah if he went 3-3 against the highest pay rolls in history then I think they did a pretty nice job.

Nobody's crying poor morons. At no point did he complain about his payroll limitations. He's absolutely right in the fact that it's easy to look like a genius when you have unlimited spending capacity. That's not crying. Some Red Sox fans still refer to the Yankees as the "Evil Empire" and complain how the Yankees buy their wins. Wake up and learn to read numbskulls. Your team does the same thing.

Obviously Showalter is doing this to fire up his club. I like it and hope that it works. Though one would think that the basic desire to win would override any trash talk confidence building techniques.

I'm sick and tired of these small market teams crying poor..  Baltimore 25 million profit and the Padres made 36million.  They traded an MVP candidate for single A and Double A prospects for A Gone. The Redsox lost money last year but still spent 170 million.  Padres spent nothing and made 36million.  There should be a minimum salary before a maximum.

Stop crying and spend money.  Winning equals ticket revenue.  The Padres shouldn't have a franchise for what they did. They could have signed A Gone and still made money something the Sox didn't.

Buck, blame your owner not the Sox and Yankees.  Baltimore isn't the smallest of markets either.

Rays ranked 3rd in runs scored in the MLB last year. They also led the MLB in Stolen Bases and Walks. They get on base and they run, nothing is going to change from last year. Additionally, the Rays were at the top in almost every pitching category, ERA, OBP, baserunners/9, K/9. Even with the loss of CC, they still have the fastest team and they have the best starting five rotation in the AL. They also had the highest innings-per-start in the MLB, which means their depleted bull-pen is used less than every other team. They lost Pena, but they gain more power from Dan Johnson and Manny Ramirez.  And for anyone dogging the orioles, they have the most dangerous lineup in the majors. They have 6 players who have hit more than 20 HR's in a season. They have 3 players that have hit more than 40 in a season. Luke Scott has hit 23 or more HR's in the last three years without even having 480 ab's.
