Ozzie Guillen The White Sox will start the season in Cleveland tomorrow, and Ozzie Guillen isn't happy about it.

"Very stupid to play in Cleveland right now," the White Sox manager told the Chicago Tribune on Thursday after his players built a snowman at the team's workout day at Progressive Field. "Nothing against Cleveland. We expect that. When you play on opening day … a couple of years ago they canceled like 30 games here. [But]  we are here and we have to play through snow."

The Indians had to clear 3-4 inches of snow to prepare for Thursday's workout and Indians groundskeeper Brandon Koehnke told the Cleveland Plain Dealer the field would be ready for play on Friday.

"Based on the forecast and the work we're doing, I don't have any reason to believe we can't be ready by Friday afternoon," Koehnke said. "It's going to be a long, painstaking process to get to that point, but these are the cards we've been dealt."

With temperatures rising, the snow is expected to melt, and Koehnke said the drainage system would take over.

That's not much comfort to the players who will be playing in the cold.

"That's why I don't understand why teams don't start in domes or on the West Coast for the first couple of weeks," Mark Buehrle told the Tribune. "We'll just have to deal with it and hopefully they can clean it off and be ready to go."

Buehrle has a point, even though it would stink to have your team constantly starting it season on the road and never getting to experience a true opening day. However, it doesn't make much sense to have the Angels, Diamondbacks and Astros open on the road.

The college baseball mention was incredibly stupid on your part, considering they may play in southern tournaments, these tournaments are in mid February and although some teams play them for awhile, Michigan State started playing in the north in mid March. All college teams have been playing more locally for the past week or two in some cases. I think they have managed just fine.

Baseball is not meant to be played in the snow. or in 30 degree weather.  By playing in that weather all your asking for is injuries.  If you think its ok to play in that kind of weather, why dont the cubs, sox, twins, etc just have spring training in their home city?  Has anyone here actually played baseball in 30 degree weather?  Why do most colleges start their season in the southern tournaments?

There is some validity to Ozzies comment.  But one way MLB can fix this is to start the season 2 weeks later and schedule more double headers throughout the season.  I don't want to see the White Sox on the road to start the season every year but if Bud Selig would move the opening day to April 16th or so it would benefit the fans later on in the season.

Why not start the season with interleague play and have all the games in domes or warm weather sites?  Then in the summer have the warm weather teams go to the midwest and east coast?  This would just make too much common sense to try!  I am sure I am not the first to think of this, but afterall - Bud probably wouldn't understand this either!
Why not just give every team 2 cities. They can have an early spring/fall city and then a summer city. Let's make them the New Orleans/Boston Red Sox. Too much of a wuss to play in some cool weather, then ship on down to the Bayou for part of the year. How about the Detroit/San Antonio Tigers? New York/Albequerque Yankees? Since Floridians can't handle the heat, how about the Calgary/Florida Marlins? Man up, play the game. Simple as that.

The whole point of the hype of opening day is to experience it at home.    That would suck to have to go on the road at the beginnig of every season.  players in other sports suck it up and basebal players have sucked it up for the past liek 80 years.  baseball does not need to look more like a wussy sport because its too "cold".   its bad enough I have to listen to their BS inuries for paper cut "lacerations" or bruised foot or some crap like that.  JUST PLAY.
