Ozzie Guillen The White Sox will start the season in Cleveland tomorrow, and Ozzie Guillen isn't happy about it.

"Very stupid to play in Cleveland right now," the White Sox manager told the Chicago Tribune on Thursday after his players built a snowman at the team's workout day at Progressive Field. "Nothing against Cleveland. We expect that. When you play on opening day … a couple of years ago they canceled like 30 games here. [But]  we are here and we have to play through snow."

The Indians had to clear 3-4 inches of snow to prepare for Thursday's workout and Indians groundskeeper Brandon Koehnke told the Cleveland Plain Dealer the field would be ready for play on Friday.

"Based on the forecast and the work we're doing, I don't have any reason to believe we can't be ready by Friday afternoon," Koehnke said. "It's going to be a long, painstaking process to get to that point, but these are the cards we've been dealt."

With temperatures rising, the snow is expected to melt, and Koehnke said the drainage system would take over.

That's not much comfort to the players who will be playing in the cold.

"That's why I don't understand why teams don't start in domes or on the West Coast for the first couple of weeks," Mark Buehrle told the Tribune. "We'll just have to deal with it and hopefully they can clean it off and be ready to go."

Buehrle has a point, even though it would stink to have your team constantly starting it season on the road and never getting to experience a true opening day. However, it doesn't make much sense to have the Angels, Diamondbacks and Astros open on the road.

Guillen: 'Very stupid' to start in Cleveland

It's 90 degrees in Southern California today and our team is in Missouri.  The schedule makers for MLB are dumb.  Pretty simple strategy of starting as many teams as you can on the west coast or that play in domes like Buehrle said.  Instead they send the Padres and the Angels to Missouri.  The owners don't like double headers so I don't understand why more thought isn't put into early season schedule choices by MLB.

Sure sounds like a great idea SkyHawk! How about you give back 10% of your yearly salary as well... It's a business, and like all businesses $$$$$ is what ALL decisions are based on. The Indians have played 162 games since 1962... for 49 years!!! Why is it a big deal after such a long time of being completely acceptable? The media is digging deep and Guillen is a crackpot. Keep the tradition going, it doesn't effect anyone but Guillen and the sheep that have an opinion on every article that is published by CBS sports regardless of the content.

I'm with you waffle.  the complaining would never end. the west coast and dome teams would then complain that they had a lot of road games on the backend.

Is it just me, or is Ozzie never happy about anything? People make starting the season this early way too big of a deal. The weather will be fine in a couple of weeks. If you don't want to go to a game until it gets warmer, then don't. Get over it.

What's next? Whining about how it's too hot to play the Marlins (in Miami) in the middle of July? Quit bitching and do what you're paid MILLIONS of dollars to do. Bunch of f'n crybabies.

Ozzie Guillen is right. Really, do we need to play 162 games a year? I think 140 would be plenty. Cut 10 games off in April and 10 in September. Or, let's just cut 20 from April and have the season start around April 20. By then, the last bits of winter are fading. Cold would be rare. This idea works.

It's no more stupid than starting the season in Chicago. Or Detroit. Or New York. Or Boston.
No kidding!  What they are saying is that the teams with no domes in colder climates (like Chicago, Minnesota, Cleveland, Milwaukee, NY, Boston, etc) should start against either teams with a dome (like Toronto) or on the road against teams from warmer climates like Florida, Texas, California, Arizona, etc.  Think it through, and read carefully, before you post.

For once something coming out of Ozzie's mouth makes sense!  I don't know why they try to force these games in late March and early April... stupid is as stupid does!
