Ozzie Guillen The White Sox will start the season in Cleveland tomorrow, and Ozzie Guillen isn't happy about it.

"Very stupid to play in Cleveland right now," the White Sox manager told the Chicago Tribune on Thursday after his players built a snowman at the team's workout day at Progressive Field. "Nothing against Cleveland. We expect that. When you play on opening day … a couple of years ago they canceled like 30 games here. [But]  we are here and we have to play through snow."

The Indians had to clear 3-4 inches of snow to prepare for Thursday's workout and Indians groundskeeper Brandon Koehnke told the Cleveland Plain Dealer the field would be ready for play on Friday.

"Based on the forecast and the work we're doing, I don't have any reason to believe we can't be ready by Friday afternoon," Koehnke said. "It's going to be a long, painstaking process to get to that point, but these are the cards we've been dealt."

With temperatures rising, the snow is expected to melt, and Koehnke said the drainage system would take over.

That's not much comfort to the players who will be playing in the cold.

"That's why I don't understand why teams don't start in domes or on the West Coast for the first couple of weeks," Mark Buehrle told the Tribune. "We'll just have to deal with it and hopefully they can clean it off and be ready to go."

Buehrle has a point, even though it would stink to have your team constantly starting it season on the road and never getting to experience a true opening day. However, it doesn't make much sense to have the Angels, Diamondbacks and Astros open on the road.

Playoff baseball is different then opening week baseball.  If the White Sox make the playoffs it is a very different thing than having the option of playing their first few series on the road or in a dome.  Opening week can be and should be scheduled better.

The baseball season is far too long as it is. Starting in April is too early to begin, and October is too late to end the season.

You can't blame Guillen for whining about this, since most players are always complaining about having to play in crappy weather to start the season. I guess all these people who grew up in warm weather climates, can't handle just a little bit of cold weather.

I hope the sox don't make the playoffs - it would be stupid to play in chicago in october.  Hey Ozzie - how about some cheese to go with that "whine"?

As always it comes down to money.

It starts with - why start on March 31st?  Because they want to end before November.  Why would a mid April start date push the schedule into late October or November?  Because they don't schedule double headers anymore so there are more days in the season.  Why don't they schedule double headers?  Because of money (and maybe because the players union doesn't like the idea of making their employees perform for more than 3 hours a day).

Its true, baseball is a summer game, not meant to be played in the snow.  It's common sense.  Obviously you can't predict the weather but what is the use of putting players at risk or losing games.  Season is way too long.

What is the difference if you start in Cleveland in April or play a cold weather team in the playoffs in October.  So, based on Ozzie's comments if the White Sox make the playoffs the city of Chicago should not host any of the games in October since it will be cold to play there and there would be a chance of SNOW.....burrrrr.  This guy is and always has been a little cry baby moron.

And so begins the Ozzie story parade for the season... Was he just made aware of the opponent or the weather conditions?  I guess since he doesn't have any umps or clubhouse disfunction yet he needed something to complain about.
