Chipper Jones

By C. Trent Rosecrans

With two hits Friday against the Phillies, Atlanta's Chipper Jones reached 2,500 career hits, but tells Carroll Rogers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he doesn't expect to play long enough to reach 3,000 hits.

"I think I walk too much," Jones said before Friday's game. "If I played four or five more years, yeah, but I don't see that being all that realistic either."

In the last three seasons, Jones has 373 hits. He turns 39 on April 24.

Jones said he values a career on-base percentage better than .400 more than he does 3,000 hits.

"There's no doubt that if I'd been a little more aggressive throughout the years, 3,000 might have been a possibility," Jones said. "But I'm more proud of the fact that I got a .400 on-base percentage throughout 18 years in the big leagues."

Jones entered Friday's game with a .405 career on-base percentage, 45th best in baseball history.

Of the 27 players in baseball history with 3,000 hits, only seven have a career on-base percentage better than .400. They are Ty Cobb (.433), Stan Musial (.417), Tris Speaker (.428), Eddie Collins (.424), Paul Waner (.404), Rickey Henderson (.401) and Wade Boggs (.415).

Jones doubled in three runs in the in the fourth inning off of Cliff Lee and singled to left in the sixth inning against Antonio Bastardo to reach 2,500. The Braves stopped the game to honor him, playing the theme from The Natural while the feat was acknowledged. Jones' manager for 2,440

With three RBI in the game, Jones is three short for 1,500 in his career, another nice number.

And to RCase- Jones is better than Schmitty?  NO WAY!  Has Chipper won 3 MVP's?

I've been a lifelong Braves fan who in the past few years moved to San Francisco.  I can't believe you guys are letting Phillies fans get under your skin about whether or not a play should have been an error.  I had the opportunity to watch the Giants crush the Phillies in the playoffs last year and their fans still are under the delusion that it didn't happen.  Classic classless fans.  I'll tell you what....take the damn hit away and let him get the record again tonight so we can celebrate the accomplishment again!!!!  Oh yeah....I attended opening day by the Bay yesterday and that trophy sure was pretty.  Wouldn't have minded it being in Atlanta though.  Stay healthy guys and I promise to fly home for the Series.

Tongue out If, if, if. Chipper still a great hitter. Victorino is a great cf. Don't think it would have mattered that much to Chipper if it had been called an error. 3 runs still score. If Victorino makes a circus catch, we still score 1, and still have two men on. What if next batter hits a 3-run dinger? Or strikes out? We still have the lead, and the end of our bullpen is giving up nothing. What if Howard hits a 3-run dinger later to win it? What about Huddy's struggles early, and Lee being shaky, 2 things no one would have predicted for this game? What about the Red Sox starting 0-6? What if we hadn't batted .200 against the Brewers this week? Baseball is great ain't it?

No error or error, does it matter he'll hit enough against Philly in this series to make you forget about 2,499.

Absolutely rediculous to say it was an error. Chipper hit it just beyond Victorinos reach. He jumped for it on the run and it still went just off of his glove out of reach. Dont be a homer and speak the truth
