Guillen: 'I don't have any closer'

I don't really root for or against teams, but there is some fun as a blogger in the White Sox losing, because it means the most entertaining manager in the game, Ozzie Guillen may have something fun to say.

After the White Sox blew another lead on Wednesday, he had didn't disappoint:

"I don't have any closer," Guillen said. "I don't. Then we will see. From this point on, you just scratch your head and second guess yourself what you're doing wrong, bringing people to the mound with a  three-run lead for the third time and we can't hold the lead. That's not a good sign.

"I see the same [stuff] you guys see. Exactly same [stuff.]

You can see the video of Guillen here:

The White Sox bullpen has been a disaster, blowing a late lead three days in a row. The White Sox were able to bounce back to win in extra innings on Tuesday. In just 12 games this season, the White Sox have blown six saves, four of them were blown by Matt Thornton. Chris Sale, who has the team's only save, also has a blown save.

Guillen said he went into Wednesday's game ready to use all three of his potential closers -- Sale, Jesse Crain and Thornton -- and he did just that.

After John Danks allowed just one run in eight innings, Sale allowed three straight hits to start the ninth, before he was replaced by Crain, who walked a batter and struck out another. Thornton came in with bases loaded and one out, gave up a bloop single to Josh Willingham to tie it before getting out of the inning, only to give up the lead in the 10th.

Back-to-back walks in 10th and then a single by Coco Crisp, Daric Barton, another single to score two more, giving the A's a 7-4 victory.

The only one, it seemed, that was stepping up their game was Guillen's son Oney, who actually had a good tweet on the situation.

Guillen: 'I don't have any closer'

Not surprising he doesn't have a closer, he could ruin the confidence of Mariano Rivera if he had him......

How does a guy get to the majors and can have his confidence ruined by a manager?  It's up to the player.  Maybe a KID can have his confidence ruined by a manager.  But an adult?  Gimme a break!  So if enough people started calling you lizard queen is that going to ruin your confidence?  Just asking. Just an example.  Don't get all cyber-psycho about it.  Previous posts have accurately stated that Ozzie is just answering questions honestly.  Reporters are asking about his bullpen and Ozzie is answering honestly instead of giving a pre-packaged politically correct response.

This is why we have a off-season, and subsequently a pre-season --to evaluate your team, and determine what is needed and who fits where.  To say this "is not his fault" is simply ridiculous.  As a manager you always need to be asking yourself "what if;" and he did not do his homework, so I give him an "F" for this category.  This guy may be entertaining, when speaking to the media; but what I see, as an outsider looking-in, is a guy who rarely takes responsibility for his own screw-ups.  This is one of his screw-ups, plain and simple.  Why don't you have a closer, Ozzie?

None of this is Ozzie's fault!  The blame should go straight to Kenny.  We lost our closer and never addressed that position.  Then Kenny decided to only bring 11 pitchers and have Milledge make the team- (there is a reason why he cleared waivers this past week).  Ozzie and Coop wanted 12 pitchers to start the season.  Ozzie is just playing the hand he was dealt with.

So, Ozzie, if you don't have a closer, why do you pull Danks?  Is he so fragile he can't get to 120 pitches?  See Halliday, Roy.

Guillen: 'I don't have any closer'

It's April 14th!  Poor Ozzie has to field questions about why his pitchers aren't getting outs.  Hey, Ozzie: How about "I'll put my guys up against the best teams out there, and we'll come out on top a majority of the time...They've performed well in the past, that's why they have the jobs they do, so let's not get too excited over a tough week of baseball in April"  Under the bus in April will lead to a long summer.

He does have control of who he brings in.  Sale pitched the night before and logged 2 innings.  If Thorton is your closer, he should of came with him in the top of the nighth.  Committee by closer doesn't work.  Point guard by committee or QB by commitee will never work in football/basketball, so surprise it doesn't work in baseball.  He always has some control of improving defense.  Several guys are making errors and misplacing bunts.  He can have the team work at those skills.  Hitting and pitching are a little harder to improve with respects to the manager.  Again, Guillen needs to hold himself accountable along with his pitchers.

Guillen: 'I don't have any closer'

I used to think that Ozzie was obnoxious but have changed my mind over the last few years. I think he is an interesting guy who stands up for his players but is not afraid to call it as he sees it. The press asks the questions, he just answers them. Obviously he feels that he does not have a dependable closer at this point in time with the closers blowing up in the three games he mentioned. I wouldn't worry about the closer's confidence as they are all professionals who know better than anybody else that they have not performed well. Ozzie is to me a throwback as many of the baseball managers are, perhaps because the game is kind of a throwback. I find it all refreshing and honest and not the usual stuff you get from most professional football and basketball coaches.

Guillen: 'I don't have any closer'

How has Ozzie ruined the confidence of any one in the so bullben, since the first day of the season everyone in the pen except Sergio Santos has gone out and stunk it up at one time or another, sometimes Sale has been good, sometimes bad, Thornton has been mostly bad and Crain has been pretty good, but when called on today with 2 on and none out he walks the first guy he sees, on a pitch that isn't even close, to load the bases. This has nothing to do with Ozzie he goes to his best guys out of the pen, and so far they are failing, all 3 of these guys are good pitchers and soon enough that will show, but until then of course when Ozzie is asked, right now he is going to say "i don't have a closer" because as of right now he doesn't, although I believe with the day off the next save opportunity will go to Santos the only guy looking good out of the pen, and if he succeeds he will keep the job.
