Mike Leake has been arrested by Cincinnati police on suspicion of theft. (Cincinnati.com )

Leake, 23, is alleged to have taken six American Rag shirts valued at $59.88 total from Macy's department store in Cincinnati. Security cameras reportedly caught him removing tags from several shirts and attemping to leave the store without paying for them. He was arrested just two hours before the Reds pitchers were expected to arrive at Great American Ball Park to ready for a game against the Pirates Monday night.

He has been booked into the Hamilton County Justice Center. If convicted of theft, the sentence would be a misdemeanor that carried a maximum of 180 days in jail. Leake will make $425,000 this season as a member of the Cincinnati Reds.

Leake was the eighth overall pick in the 2009 draft and went directly to the majors for the start of the 2010 season. He was the 21st player to do so since 1965. He got out to a hot start but cooled later in the season, ending 8-4 with a 4.23 ERA. With a few injuries to expected starting pitchers, he has rejoined the rotation for this season. He's 2-0 with a 5.40 ERA in three starts.

Considering the incident just happened a few hours ago, it's hard to say how this event will affect his standing with the team.

There is a copy of the police report available on Cincinnati.com -- where Leake said the address of his employer is "Reds Stadium."

The Reds have released the following statement:

"On behalf of the Cincinnati Reds organization, at this time we are advised to not publicly address this matter because of the pending legal proceedings. However, we do not condone behavior of the type alleged, which is wholly inconsistent with the principles of this organization and our community and is detrimental to the positive direction we seek to follow. When the legal process has been completed, we will handle this matter internally."

Also, there's been a statement released on behalf of Leake. Here it is:

"Today, Mike Leake was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of theft from the Macy’s store downtown. Right now, he has been advised by his attorney to offer no further statements on this matter. This case will proceed in the justice system, where Mike’s story will be told. Until that time, there will be nothing further from Mike on this episode until the court proceedings have concluded. However, Mike wishes to apologize to his family, the fans, Mr. Castellini, [general manager] Walt [Jocketty], [manager] Dusty [Baker], his teammates and the entire Reds organization for this distraction."

Reds' starting pitcher Leake arrested for theft;

 I'll stick to what I do know. Mike Leake does participate in Charity events. & donated money to a youth home for Cancer kids this past winter. He also was part of the @TwitChange Celebrity auction on twitter for Operation Once In A Lifetime..benefitting troops. If this indeed happened as said, I hope he gets counseling. If it has been twisted, I hope he doesn't pay 4 something he isn't guilty of. Moving on...the boy can pitch. I'm gonna focus on that.

The team statement really should have read...

Leake was in fact arrested on charges of theft this evening and while we do not typically condone this sort of behavior you do have to admit it is pretty freakin funny.

Reds' starting pitcher Leake arrested for theft

Isn't it ironic that as a pitcher he is taught to prevent stealing?

This reminds me of Johnny Jolly for the Packers, dealing drugs out of his car, gets suspended for a year and then with a chance to make amends and make some real $$, he gets caught again. Same thing with Michael Vick and the dog fighting (although that one was more serious than these), but just shows these guys have bad habits that are not fixed by money. Idiots.

The guy has a problem .  It's not about money . It's about the thrill excitement of stealing something. He wont serve time for it though.
Maybe some probation and a slap fine like a few hundred or community service when he probably needs therapy

Hey, though, there is good news in this one!  IF Leake actually serves time for his crime, then there is less of an opportunity for Dusty Baker to tear his arm out, just like he has done with about every solid pitcher he has ever managed!
