Mike Leake has been arrested by Cincinnati police on suspicion of theft. (Cincinnati.com )

Leake, 23, is alleged to have taken six American Rag shirts valued at $59.88 total from Macy's department store in Cincinnati. Security cameras reportedly caught him removing tags from several shirts and attemping to leave the store without paying for them. He was arrested just two hours before the Reds pitchers were expected to arrive at Great American Ball Park to ready for a game against the Pirates Monday night.

He has been booked into the Hamilton County Justice Center. If convicted of theft, the sentence would be a misdemeanor that carried a maximum of 180 days in jail. Leake will make $425,000 this season as a member of the Cincinnati Reds.

Leake was the eighth overall pick in the 2009 draft and went directly to the majors for the start of the 2010 season. He was the 21st player to do so since 1965. He got out to a hot start but cooled later in the season, ending 8-4 with a 4.23 ERA. With a few injuries to expected starting pitchers, he has rejoined the rotation for this season. He's 2-0 with a 5.40 ERA in three starts.

Considering the incident just happened a few hours ago, it's hard to say how this event will affect his standing with the team.

There is a copy of the police report available on Cincinnati.com -- where Leake said the address of his employer is "Reds Stadium."

The Reds have released the following statement:

"On behalf of the Cincinnati Reds organization, at this time we are advised to not publicly address this matter because of the pending legal proceedings. However, we do not condone behavior of the type alleged, which is wholly inconsistent with the principles of this organization and our community and is detrimental to the positive direction we seek to follow. When the legal process has been completed, we will handle this matter internally."

Also, there's been a statement released on behalf of Leake. Here it is:

"Today, Mike Leake was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of theft from the Macy’s store downtown. Right now, he has been advised by his attorney to offer no further statements on this matter. This case will proceed in the justice system, where Mike’s story will be told. Until that time, there will be nothing further from Mike on this episode until the court proceedings have concluded. However, Mike wishes to apologize to his family, the fans, Mr. Castellini, [general manager] Walt [Jocketty], [manager] Dusty [Baker], his teammates and the entire Reds organization for this distraction."

Well, this certainly was unexpected. What an incredibly stupid, alledged, act on Mike Leake's part. Hopefully the embarrassment combined with whatever punishment awaits is enough to curb his career in thievery before it ruins his career in MLB.

tlakes------

All I got to say to Leake is Come On Man.

You hit the nail right on the head!

Who gets sent to the minors?  Well, once again - I think you called it.  Mike Leake shot himself in the foot this morning.  The Reds don't have much choice do they?  I didn't realize Johnny Cueto and Homer Bailey were on the DL.  As you said - The FO won't have to sweat this one, unless they move Leake sooner.

The amount means nothing, this guy obviously has a problem.  Do you all really think Leake needed the 6 shirts?  Shoplifters don't need the merchandise they take, it's a compulsion about being able to get away with the act of stealing.
What exactly do you disagree with, 99 Rams? I don't know if simply commenting on the story is worthy of ridicule but I thought philsfan made a pretty good point. As a teenager working in a large dept. store, I developed a bit of a kleptomania before finally getting pinched. The thought process is no different for a wealthy major league pitcher swiping some expensive shirts, as it's not something that was needed or that couldn't have been paid for legally but when you get away with something a few times, the tendency is to keep pushing it. One thing I think everyone can agree on is that Leake probably feels pretty retarded right now.

Reds' starting pitcher Leake arrested for theft

As a Reds fan, I'm embarrassed right now.  Stealing $59 worth of merchandise that's sad.  He makes about 450 K, stupid to steal stuff that's worth like nothing to you.  Common sense says to just buy the stuff if you want it that bad.  He won't get in any trouble but he'll probably get like a $300 fine or something like that and get a slap on the wrist.  I guess one thing good out of this is Dusty Baker won't have a hard time making a decision of sending someone to AAA when Cueto and/or Bailey come back.  Stupid decision and I hope he learns from it.  The Reds are not normally known for having players that get in trouble so I'm not sure how they'll deal with this.  This kind of behavior I expect out of Bengals players, but not Reds players.  All I got to say to Leake is Come On Man.

No, not really.  It was six shirts totalling $60.  See the article:  "valued at $59.88 total"
