Phillies starting pitcher Joe Blanton has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with what's being termed an elbow impingement on his throwing arm. Vance Worley will get the start Friday with Blanton down. (Matt Gelb via Twitter)

Here's the word on an elbow impingement: When Blanton flips his arm forward, palm out, it causes his blood vessels and nerves to compress which causes pain. Since that's essentially what the throwing motion is, he likely suffers pain with each pitch. Over time, that stress causes inflammation which means he's constantly experiencing pain.

Blanton, 30, is the overshadowed member of the Phillies vaunted rotation behind Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels, but he's a fine No. 5 starter. He's gotten off to a rocky start this season with a 5.92 ERA and 1.56 WHIP in four starts, but last season Blanton went 9-6 with a 4.82 ERA and 134 strikeouts in 175 2/3 innings. He's not an All-Star by any stretch, but many teams would like to have him as a three or four, let alone their fifth starter.

Worley, 23, got a cup of coffee with the Phils last season and made it count. He threw 13 innings and only allowed two earned runs (a 1.38 ERA) while striking out 12 and walking just four. In Triple-A Lehigh Valley this season, Worley is 2-2 with a 2.78 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 25 strikeouts against just six walks in 22 2/3 innings.

So, is anyone else on the Phillies going to get hurt? First we start the season without Chase Utley and Brad Lidge, then we lose Jose Contreras and now Joe Blanton

Don't foret about Dominik Brown and JC Romero

Coming off the day off, might the Phils just jump everyone forward a day to pitch?  I mean as a Mets fan, last thing I want is to see all of the big 3 rather than just 2 of the big 3, but I'd think as Phillies management, this is a viable option, especially with the day off on Monday as well.

I guess if he stopped eating twinkies and ate more guacamole and veggies, he'd be a better pitcher. He definitely needs to go on a diet. The good news is the Phillies keep winning and without several key players. I'm sure Vance Worley will be up to the challenge...who knows, he may be better then Blanton. No complaints there either.

Worley or Kendrick?

(please be Worley, please be Worley, please be Worley)....Kendrick seems to have found himself a bit of a niche in the bullpen.

Blanton to disabled list with elbow injury

Unconfirmed reports are saying that this is not a major issue.  Anonymous sources saywhat happened was Blanton suffered a gastro-intestinal malfunction while eating a twinkee and part of said twinkee became lodged in his elbow.  Since the radioactive half-life of a twinkee is 4 days they believe that the rogue twinkee particles will break down within the 15 day stint on the DL with no long term ramifications.

Boy the injury bug sure has bitten the Phils so far this year. While this one isn't as bad as the closer situation. We really are without one right now. That seems to be the most concerning right now unless Chooch is hurt after he couldn't start the bottom of the first last night. That would be devastating to the lineup and starting staff. Let's hope he is ok. It is time for the offense to step it up and give the starters support and take the pressure off the closer. Let's go Phils!!!! SCORE BABY SCORE!!!!!!!
