Report: Jim Crane closing in on buying Astros

Jim Crane could be closing in on becoming the new owner of the Astros, KILT 610 AM reports via, as current owner Drayton McLane has entered into an "exclusive negotiating window."

McLane refused to confirm reports of such a window, saying that he was negotiating with several people. "We're trying to do a deal with several people, and certain Jim Crane is one of them," McLane said.

Crane owns a business in Houston, which would satisfy McLane's preference for a local owner. The two sides had come close to a purchase after the 2008 season, but Crane backed out much to the consternation of many in the game. Crane has also pursued the Cubs and Rangers, teaming up with Mark Cuban to battle the eventual victorious group of Nolan Ryan's team in an auction for Texas.

The Astros could benefit from new leadership, as Houston has tailed off dramatically since reaching the 2005 World Series. The Astros roster is filled with many middling types while the farm system is among the worst in the game. It's definitely a franchise in need of a breath of fresh air.

Ed Wade is a horrific GM, that is the bottomline. He does not have a winner's mentality and is constantly filling gaps with mediocre type players. He did the same with the Phils, there is no getting around those facts. Talk all you want about all these players "he drafted", but the facts are that Mike Arbuckle drafted those players. He was in charge of scouting and was hired well before Wade became GM. Arbuckle also oversaw a system that was continuosly rated aamong the worst in baseball while Wade was GM, even with the guys mentioned. If you decide that Wade deserves credit for allowing his top scout to do his job, fine, but stop acting like it was Wade's decision to draft these guys. GM's go off of scout's recommendations. He is the worst kind of GM, he doesn't let his team get real bad, he keeps them just competitive enough make someone think they are close to turning a corner.

Great post, balsdeep. Though Ed Wade wasn't great with free-agent signings (David Bell, Kevin Millwood, etc) and midseason trades, he is the one that drafted key core players that have allowed the Phillies to make it to 3 striaght NLCSs and two of the last three World Series. Phillykid is one of those mis-informed Phillie fans who only focuses on Wade's shortcomings. Was he a great GM? No, but he did some good things for the Phillies. Phillykid is just chock full of spite for some reason, always venting like a child.

I'm not an Ed Wade apologists by any stretch. I am an Astro fan and his time spent in Houston has been a waste. However, Drayton Mcclane refuses to spend money on any draft picks. It's hard to judge Wade because of his limitations due to current ownership. We have to look at what he did in Philly.

1998- drafted Pat Burrell, Jason Micheals (which later landed Arthur Rhodes in trade), Ryan Madsen, Geoff Geary (which later landed Lidge in trade)

1999- Brett Myers, Marlon Byrd

2000- Chase Utley, Taylor Buchholz (which later landed Billy Wagner in Trade)

2001- Gavin Floyd, Ryan Howard

2002- Cole Hammels

2003- Michael Bourn (also helped land Lidge), Kyle Kendrick

2004- J.A. Happ (which landed Oswalt in trade)

These draft results lead directly to the World Series and is still paying amazing dividends. So why are Philly fans always so negative about Ed Wade? Just looking at where you were before Wade and even now, the majority of your success should be atributed to Ed Wade.
