Mariners designate Bradley for assignment

For a few hours, it appeared Milton Bradley had avoided being cut loose by the Mariners, as they designated Ryan Langerhans for assignment Monday morning in promoting Mike Wilson. Only now the Mariners have decided to designate Bradley for assignment, too, recalling Carlos Peguero in a corresponding move. (MLB.com via Twitter)

This move will almost certainly lead to Bradley's release. The other options are the Mariners trading Bradley to another team within 10 days -- I'll pause for laughter here -- or Bradley clearing waivers and being sent to the minors. And he'd have to accept the assignment in the latter case. So, again, the most likely scenario is Bradley is released and if any team should really want him, they could then grab him for the league minimum with the Mariners eating a little more than $9 million this season on the contract.

Bradley's contract was originally signed with the Cubs, who shipped Bradley after one tumultuous season to Seattle for another awful contract in Carlos Silva. The Mariners ended up paying Bradley a bit more than they owed Silva in the trade.

As is becoming pretty commonplace, Bradley will be leaving a pretty sour taste in the mouths of fans.

The Mariners were Bradley's eighth team and he's been in the league for 12 seasons. For a while (about 2003-2008), Bradley was a bad seed with tons of production when actually healthy and sane. Now he's just a bad seed, as he hit .209 with a .649 OPS, bad defense and several on- and off-field problems in two seasons (just 101 games) for the Mariners.

It's possible this is the end of Bradley's major-league career, but there are still 22 teams who haven't given him a shot. He'll probably get at least one more chance.

As strange as it seems, I know someone will take a chance on Milton Bradley...maybe Parker Brothers. Bradley had a great year with the Rangers and then signed his free agent contract with the Cubs. He was dreadful as a team mate and often injured. His bad defense has always been there, but  he had a great OBP when with the Rangers, hence the big contract. Still, knowing his temperment, the Cubs gave him a great deal...I know the Mariners were trying to dump deadweight too when the traded Carlos Silva, but Silva is a saint compared to Bradley in the clubhouse.

I' sure if he were to get professional help, something good may happen. The problem is, most teams don't want to go there...let him get counseling and the proper medications, so he can actually play. I'm sure some team desparate for a hitter will take the leap...the question is...who???

Don't be surprised to see Bradley end up with the Padres.  Probably not a bad spot for him considering he would be the best
hitter in the Padres line up which is so bad they will probably set a record for being shut out.  I don't think they will trade for him
but if released, the Padres will take a chance.

Actually his numbers weren't half bad. They weren't more than half good either. Bradley has the unfortunate ability to alienate his brethren, wear earplugs on his home field, absolutely refuse to DH, was bad in the field despite making four good plays in six weeks.

To speak to the Fan friendly atmosphere; The Yankee Sucks fiasco was stupid and they knew it as soon as managemnet did it. They back pedalled for two weeks over it...old news.

And what exactly is wrong with fan friendly anyway? I was at a football game where the guy next to me kept calling the other players b**t f**kers. I didn't care, nor my wife, but the family right below him, with a girl about 15 and a boy about 12 may have had a problem with it. What do you think, or do you have kids that you want to introduce to the games and your world?

Very true and I agree with that. But your taught not to hold your bat like it's a club. Cust will be gone, as well as Saunders and Figgins had better get going or they will be next. The hussle play you refer to was a week ago Thursday I believe. Major leaguers put themselves to make a play everyday not every other week. Ibanez had anchors on his shoes playing for the M's and could still make the plays and bat around 300, with a good presence. I don't think that is too much too ask from someone who will make more this year than most of us will make in a lifetime. There are reasons that ball players are held to a higher standard, and most of it has to do with batting and defense.
